Lots of guys use that Econ Speed for climb but they were very explicit in AQP that it's only for cruise.

Another interesting point a Captain made: our airfoil is designed for high subsonic speeds. It excels in this region, even in the climb. He put it at ~320 knots in pitch mode (to avoid oscillations) and it had the same ascent rate you'd get at ~280 but with a lot more horizontal distance covered.

In NY area they want altitude first. ORD & DFW, they just want you out of their airspace as quickly as possible. CRJ drivers like to go on about how "this wing loves speed", but it's true. The faster you go, the better it climbs. But seriously, who cares about profiles. Go plaid & make that flight home!! Mach tuck be damned!!

Ok, I'll be that guy...
Sure 320 to .70 gives a nice steady fpm, but I don't see it as the best rate of climb over time.

I personally like pitch mode at 2.5 degrees. As far as econ in climb, its supposed to be used in climb. At AQP, theres a couple of instructors telling bad information, so half the pilot group argues one way. Guess we are all to lazy to read about it in the actual manual.

As high as you can as fast as you can. Nice. You're the guy we'll be reading about who stalled the damn thing at the TOC and then tried to add power and maintain altitude hoping it would resolve itself. Any pilot with the blanket statement of 'get to altitude as quick as possible' is someone you don't want at the helm. Clearly, there is a fundamental lack of airmanship and the basics that go along with that. I can only assume your post was a joke, and a poor one at that. I don't think them boys who launched out of KLIT and lawn-darted into a Missouri backyard with locked cores would agree with a climb profile such as the one you spoke of. Just my thoughts.

Excellent post. Put the hammer down on it, and you might climb a little slower vertically, but at the TOC you have the energy & power to immediately get on speed (if you're not already there) and you are 50+NM (at a minimum) further down the road than the guy who climbed quickly vertically at the expense of forward speed and now he is sitting there plowing along through the air, HOPING to accelerate on speed, burning all that fuel to essentially go nowhere.
Again, excellent post. That Captain 'gets it'.

I've noticed the CRJ oscillates much worse than the ERJ, or at least that's how it seems. I've got no empirical data for the trollz that be. Pitch mode is a fantastic way to get a comfortable ride, in both climbs and descents.

Saving fuel on the climb out and enroute isn't about saving the company money its about not having to divert on go home leg when they turn the airport around, weather moves in, or traffic backs up and you have to hold a bit.
