Part 121 & CFIing

I'm sure this has been asked a million times, so I apologize up front

Does it break the "no external commercial flying" rule if you do BFRs/IPCs etc (as long as the student's currency hasn't lapsed), since the other guy is qualified as PIC? Don't the FARs say that you aren't providing a "pilot service" by instructing in these situations since you don't even need a 3rd class to do it?

Thanks guys. Looking for ways to make a little extra on the side

good question I alwasy get differnt answers, but technically CFI'ing is really utilizing you COMM ticket, its using your CFI so I dunno

Different companies view this, um, differently. The one I work for specifically states no outside flying including instructing.

Also, you can't be a CFI without a commercial certificate, therefore you are utilizing commercial privileges doing so. Easy enough to follow that logic?

Yes you need at Coomerical cerificate, but you are Utilizing your CFI, FOSTERS is a wackado

Your wrong, you are utlizing your CFI

Printed on the back of my CFI certificate, under section XIII: Limitations:

"Valid only when accompanied by pilot certificate No. ########. Expires: [date]"

The number that follows is my commercial certificate number.

My question to you, if you are only utilizing your CFI license, why are you required to carry and have your commercial license?

Being a CFI doesn't count as commercial operations. You don't have to have a class 2 to be a CFI. You can be a CFI even if you fly 121. However, this is hard to word, you can't do anything in violation of a regular commercial license. Like hold out, advertising, or general knowledge to the public that you can be hired for anything other than CFI.

I've known several guys that were CFI's while flying for Pinnacle. But I guess the company could lop their own rule ontop of FARs.

I agree you are using the CFI. But you are also using the Commercial. That's my point. Why are you still trying to fight this argument?

Im not I just think its funny that you think a CFI is a license ahahahah Imade you look stupid hahahahhaahaa

If you get paid, it is commercial flying, and counts against 121 daily/weekly/monthly/annual flight time limits and probably against daily duty time limits.

I take the view that instruction provided to my friends/family for no charge is not really commercial flying any more than a $100 hamburger is, but I have heard different opinions on this. I doubt the FAA would have the slightest interest if you were not getting compensated....however if you were obviously providing free instruction to the general public to build PIC time that might be a problem (the flight time might count as compensation). For me it would be pretty hard to seriously make a case that I need any more ASEL PIC...
