Logbooks

I've searched the word "logbook," in the search bar and the most recent thread about it looked to be in 2013.

Just wanted to see what everyone thinks is the best - and cheapest - eLogbook to use for their career and why.

I'm currently instructing and would like to have my paper logbook as well as a print out of an electronic one in a leather binder.

CaptYoda 12-26-2016 08:51 PM

Try searching "electronic logbook" and there are some posts in 2016. I think Mcc Log and some others are mentioned.

Dhood84 12-27-2016 06:37 AM

Leather bound binder? Who carries paper anymore? 😂😂😂. Logten Pro.....that's the standard now a days.

Did you happen to look on page 2 of this forum?

I've been using the Excel Pilot Logbook awhile. I think it was $25 for the template. Very easy to use and to tailor to your needs. It also looks great in printed form. Spending a bunch of cash on fancy logbooks makes zero sense. Don't even get me started on headsets 😮

Logten pro is out. The new one time fee logbook is MCC Pilot Log for everything the others due with yearly fees.

Ohlsan 12-27-2016 12:02 PM

I just started MCCPILOTLOG and it seems pretty awesome. One time fee, not the monthly/yearly payments like others.

SideFlare 12-27-2016 12:25 PM

All of the above are good options and you will find plenty of guys on the line using them. What it comes down to is operating platform and cost to the individual. LogTen Pro, which I have used since it was free, is good but it will cost you. I know guys that have gotten hired at majors/LCCs with all or / a combination of the above. One dude did some excel ninja work on his own and created a product that surpassed them all. When you apply, take along a flight time summary sheet to summarize your totals. The rest is just to a sanity check for the company doing the hiring. Bottom line is that which one you use doesn't matter much... it's the presentation and the time. Good luck.

AZFlyer 12-27-2016 12:55 PM

Yep. mccPilotLog is great. Pay the one time fee for the full capabilities and you get all the good stuff. I'll have my flight logged through my phone within a minute of setting the parking brake. At the beginning of the day I'll take 2 minutes to add whatever flights I'm scheduled to fly for the day (tail number, crew, city pair, flight number, etc) into the app and then some point after pushback I'll plug in the out time, and within a minute or two of blocking in I put in the in time and any other pertinent details (imc time and approach type). The app automatically does the math on how long the flight was, calculates night time, etc. Then it syncs automatically with the desktop application. I love it.

atpcfi 12-27-2016 01:59 PM

I've been using MCC Pilot Log as well for about the last 6 months. It has some quirks but overall a good product. Pulls the times and names right off crewtrac so you don't have to worry about carrying a paper log around with you. The one drawback I've found is crewtrac has ship numbers and not N numbers so you will need to take note of that once you get to the plane so you can match them up in the database, other than that it's pretty streamlined. I'm still trying to figure out the mobile app since it's not very intuitive, might help if I read the instructions.... I would highly recommend the enterprise version since it will also store your data in a cloud in case something happens to your PC.

If you plan on being a professional pilot get a professional logbook program. Don't risk potential career opportunities to save $20 a year.

HighFlight 12-28-2016 06:23 AM

Doesn't matter what you use, as long as you keep it up to date. More pilots have been hired to majors with paper than electronic, I'd wager.

And with the way folks spell and their usage of grammar, I'd also bet that would be more of a interview detractor than any form of logbook used today.

typeunkwn 12-30-2016 04:46 PM

Search my post history. Fairly sure I started a thread on this or at least replied to one a few months back as I was also looking to switch. Fast forward to now...LogTen pro...got it. Love it. Very user friendly and intuitive. Phenomenal support staff. Cons: yearly fee(unless you have a MacBook)

TiredSoul 12-30-2016 05:20 PM

I still keep a paper logbook...and it's up to date.

WaterRooster 12-30-2016 08:28 PM

SafeLog.... I find it better then all the above options. Syncs across all platforms and the cloud with free apps. I think it's the best option personally

Would you mind elaborating? I'm looking to drop LogTenPro. I've been evaluating SafeLog and mccPilotLog.

pilot2804 12-31-2016 06:27 AM

After reading all this, I picked up mccpilotlog. I kept a foreflight logbook and the only downside is that they didn't convert foreflight so i had to add all my flights manually (i would've just done experience, but im sure the regionals would like to see it all)

Of course I'll have my paper logs for the endorsements and signatures from my checkrides/etc, but I feel that a printed log will be a bit more professional. mccpilotlog is good so far, I probably won't buy the package until I hit the regionals though

I think comparing the two that you are trying out, safelog is a little more user friendly. It makes more sense on what to click and where to go. It's a simple display compared to mcc. I can import my schedules at the end of a trip by downloading and copy/pasting into it and it takes care of the rest. Everything is cloud based so it syncs across desktop/iPhone/iPad. Also the filter is spectacular and have reports for Airline Apps and Pilot Credentials.
What I don't like is that some features are cloud based as well, such as currency. If I want to check it I have to be online to do it. Overall I think that benefits outweighs the negatives.

Can you not export foreflight into a csv file? Mcc would have imported the csv file.

They do export CSV but mcc didn't recognize it. I submitted a ticket with them and sent the csv and they're gonna try and make it compatible for future users

NMuir 12-31-2016 01:13 PM

Foreflight with a paper log backup. When I get to the regionals I will probably begin to explore other options.

raptor22ms 12-31-2016 01:43 PM

I myself went with Logbook pro for PC. One time fee of $75 and I can run it on any windows device. Plus all the other options. Got in and entered all my past time. Glad to know the almighty calculator does not mess up as much as me. Bought a nice binder and printed it out. Looks way better than my older paper book. I do keep it updated though. Just in case.....

Any thoughts on Zululog?

Used it up to when I got to the 121 world. After that the other programs offered more option for tracking and reports of hours

LogTen Pro X subscription for a Mac

I used to have LogBook Pro (still do, technically, I guess). Now I have a Macbook, an iPad, and an iPhone, and I don't want to have to buy a Windows emulator (like Parallels ($80)) and a new version of Windows ($119) just to run LogBook Pro (or use bootcamp and have to reboot my Mac every time I want to access my logbook). That's $200 for access to my logbook.

So, I was thinking LogTen Pro X. But, it seems as of March 2017, the new update (version 7.4) requires you pay a $99 subscription each year. This used to be an issue for the iPad and iPhone only, but is now a MacBook issue as well - right?

I'm not the most tech savvy guy. Am I understanding this correctly - $100/year for the Mac, and another $80/year (or is it $100?) for the iPhone or iPad, or pay $200 to get access to LogBook Pro (which I already own!)?

foumanchu 03-14-2017 12:56 PM

Looks like if you get the PRO version, which is Mac and iOS, it is $129.99/yr or $14.99/month

I haven't used Logbook Pro so I can't really compare the two. When Logten Pro started charging annually, I was upset, but decided to pay. I still use it and think it is probably the best e-logbook out there. I would definitely recommend for Mac/iOS even having to pay a subscription

MCC Pilot log One time fee and you are set for any type of computer.

TheWeatherman 03-14-2017 07:32 PM

So I have been using http://myflightbook.com since I got my CFI and it has been working pretty well. I am looking to start applying to the Regionals in a month or two, do you think it is worth moving on to a different elogbook like MCC? Does myflightbook not work well in the 121 world?

I use MyFlightbook.com too since I started and so far it's being great, keeps track of your currency and is very detailed, recently interviewed with a regional and brought just my electronic Log book, my paper logbook was stolen from my car along with headsets and go pro camera, all in my flight bag. They accepted it no questions asked.
One thing I do is that I scanned every Endorsement, document and what not for my peace of mind, I do that with everything, I keep Electronic copies of almost every document I have so I was lucky enough to have my endorsements and records digitalized, printed them out and put hem with my log book (printed) and they seem to like it, (I got the job) Don't know how it will perform in 121 but as soon as I start I will post and Update unless somebody here already tried and is willing to share his experience. I'm going to take a look at MCC since lots of people here seem to like it.

Tester130 03-15-2017 05:08 AM

Read the following articles. If your logbook stacks up to what they are looking for, you should be fine. If not, then maybe you want to try a different program. I personally recommend bringing a nice clean printed copy of your logbook with all the pages signed as IMO it is more professional. At the same time, more and more folks are only keeping digital logbooks, so I'm guessing they are getting more used to being handed a tablet.

To input or not to input

Hello,
as I'm making my first real logbook (via mcclogbook software), I was wondering about a few entries. I'm a military pilot (and instructor) currently instructing RW down at Rucker, AL.

1) I'll have some entries that I will not be disclosing the names of the other crew on due to the nature of the mission.

2) I have students that I will not be disclosing the name of as they are Foreign Military Exchange students and we typically keep those names close hold within the training.

Can anyone see an issue with those situations? Listing "Classified" for situation 1 or "Student 1/ Student 2" accordingly for the 2nd scenario?

If you print out a normal type of logbook, I don't believe any of that info is there. The inputs within the logbook are there for your personal book keeping.

Air Stang 7 03-15-2017 12:48 PM

I used an excel template I found online which is pretty nifty. It just doesn't have all the columns I'd like but I'm sure there are wizards out there that can make one even better.

It does not print the names unless you specify for it to. Go to the logbook tab, then go down to logbook format. Pick the logbook that you want your printout to look like then preview a page. To add names, you would have to go to logbook columns and click next to names of other pilots to print the names in the logbook.

Thank you both for the input. I appreciate it. I am glad for this as I didn't want to come off looking like a hoity toity "look at my secret flights" guy. I also didn't want to get my ass handed to me when some prior staff guy is interviewing me and happens to see something that shouldn't be there.

I'm not an apple person but I'll still agree with this. It's a great logbook with loads of features. Regardless, a big annual fee really stings a little bit.

+1 on this. LogTen Pro is definitely the best purchase I've made in my flying career.

Taylor814ce 03-15-2017 07:29 PM

Had LogtenPro. Now have MccPilotlog. Much prefer the Mccpilotlog.

HighFlight 03-15-2017 07:43 PM

I'm with you on using Excel. Mine has everything I have ever seen in one of the expensive ]logbooks, plus I have a sheet to calculate my per diem automatically.
