ORD Republic X-wind Landing
 

While many of you have seen this, for those that haven't take a moment and have a look. While many of the comments praise the crew, you and I know that this was nothing resembling textbook. Not even in the ball park. Not meant to beat up the Republic guys or any regional guys (175 with AA paint on the tail) but for all the "we deserve more" chest-beating, we ought to bring more to the table than what this vid shows. And as more senior guys head to the majors thus driving overall experience down at the regionals, I'm afraid this level of ability will become the norm.

They did a fine job, but I have to wonder if the landing attempt would have been worth it if they ended up hitting a wing tip or going off into the weeds. What's the crosswind limitations on those things anyhow?

Wait until one of these former CFI types with 5 busts and a DUI who upgraded in 18 months bends metal while adjusting his gopro for super sikk shots on instagram.

It looks like he held the crab to the ground, planted the right wheel and Ruddered over to put the nose wheel on the centerline. A common technique in planes that have engine under the wings (and larger aircraft overall.) No crazy float, and not terribly off centerline, inside the touchdown zone. Things get hairy sometimes in crosswinds, as we all know. It's not gonna be an absolute textbook landing every time.

Fine job? Do you think his flight instructor said that when he landed his 172 like that?

That landing was complete ****. It's one thing to use correct technique and plant it on, but it's another to just have a lack of flying skills.

Please cite a source that says that is a common technique.
