Default Emergency Announcements

I've included an article about British Airways flight 0206, who in the middle of the night had an emergency announcements go out to the passengers about preparing for an emergency landing in the water...

British Airways message error warns passengers of crash - Telegraph

How do these emergency announcements go out? Are they automated? Are they control in the cockpit by the flight crew? I've heard of this happening before, and was just wondering. Did someone in the cockpit hit a wrong button?

Should automated messages be removed to keep panic from happening when something like this happens?

Thoughts?

LOL! Do it with an evil laugh and then say "Just Kidding," like what Johnny from "Airplane!" (1980) when he unplugged the runway lights.

"When we landed they were handing out letters apologising, but it was the worst experience of my life. I don't think BA should get away with this."

Sounds like someone is getting ready to sue
