By the looks of this article, the media again seems to have the whole story: Fire "breaks out", "blaze", "inferno", and other choice words are used.
Was there ever any real fire? Or even any smoke? By the looks of the article and hearing the passenger interviews in the video, it appears there was no fire or even any smoke.
Why does the media get a free pass to embellish the story to make it sell?
Instead of "plane catches fire, lands in Albany", how about "pilots receive cargo fire warning, make emergency landing in Albany"?
Unless there was a blaze and I was missing something, why do we allow the media to react like this?
And in a related story, why do so many PIC's give the EVAC command to dump 150 people on the Tarmac with out any forethought? Two recent examples is this one and Southwest in LGA (nose gear collapse). If there is a REAL threat to passenger safety, by all means EVAC. But EVACs notoriously lead to injuries that otherwise would not be sustained by a "expeditious deplaning".
Did anyone see the video comparing the two virtually identical actual engine fire scenarios caught on film (I believe one was DAL), where one evacuated into fire suppression efforts (injuring several), and the other allowed CFR to work the problem and put out the fire and allow the aircraft to deplane with stairs?
This was a wonderful training video, showing calm planning, response, and risk assessment. Nowadays it seems, no matter what - blown tire, brake fire, nose collapse, or even a cargo smoke indication - it's blow the slides and bail over the side. Why not give CFR a chance to roll up to you and assess? They are on scene in literally seconds.

Allegiant makes emergency landing in S. GA
ALBANY, Ga. (AP) — More than 150 passengers safely exited an Allegiant Air jet that made an emergency landing at a south Georgia airport, authorities said.
Police in Albany said they responded to reports of a possible fire in the cargo department of the plane shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday.
Concerns about the possible fire led the plane -- Allegiant Air flight 863 -- to make an emergency landing at Southwest Georgia Regional airport in Albany.
Passengers learned there was a problem when a harried flight attendant announced the plane was making an emergency landing, Tampa Bay Times reported. The jet then made an "incredibly sudden stop" at Albany's small airport, said one passenger, retired Tampa Bay Times reporter Jeff Testerman.
Passengers were told to leave their belongings on board and slide down chutes that deployed at the front and back of the plane, he said.
All 155 passengers and 6 crewmembers got off the plane safely, WALB-TV reported.
"The pilots had an indication of a possible fire in the cargo hold," Allegiant spokesman Brian Davis said. "In an abundance of caution, they made the decision to land and get everyone off the plane."
It wasn't clear late Sunday whether there actually had been a fire.
The plane had taken off from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was scheduled to land in St. Petersburg, Fla., Davis said. Officials were planning to drive the passengers by bus to St. Petersburg, he said.
Albany is about 180 miles south of Atlanta.

…because news outlets are a business first!
Headlines sell and attract attention, the splashier the better. Thus, larger viewer/readership and more ad dollars etc are generated. News outlets are not about facts first. They are about attracting viewer/readers first. Whoever has the most eye catching headlines gains more attention/viewers/readers on the average.
Like auto dealerships. News outlets are a business, nothing more.
