Default Airbus A400M Crash in Spain

A brand new Airbus A400M military transport crashed a short while ago in Spain. Apparently they were conducting a test flight and made an emergency landing due to a reported technical problem. No word yet on the cause.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with the A400M?

It appears to be a new model of aircraft. From what I've gathered, the Airbus A400M’s four turbines are rated at 11,000 ESHP each, powering eight bladed Scimitar props through a reduction gear box.

That’s a lot of power for a gear box to handle. I'm wondering how significant the effect of the drag increase from such a large windmilling prop might be on the aircraft's performance? That is, if one of the engine gearboxes were to malfunction, and/or if an auto-feather system were to malfunction, during an engine failure?

The A400M's props on each side are counter rotating; achieved through the engine gearbox mechanism. All four turbines are apparently symmetrically rotating, so I think that the non-standard gearbox arrangement would be fitted to the two engines on the left side.

NB. I'm in no way suggesting or speculating here about the actual cause

Air forces across Europe suspended flights of the Airbus Group NV A400M after one of the military transport aircraft crashed near Seville, Spain, killing four people.

Britain’s Royal Air Force and Germany’s Luftwaffe both said they’d pause operations of the plane until the reasons for the crash become clear. The aircraft that went down on Saturday was several minutes into a first test flight before being delivered to Turkey. Germany has just one unit so far.

France will only permit “priority flights in operations already underway,” Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said at a meeting of European defense ministers in Lorient, western France.

Among the six people on the plane, all Spanish employees of Airbus, four were killed and two seriously injured, Airbus said. The accident occurred about 1 p.m. local time Saturday, about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of Seville’s San Pablo Airport. Airbus said it’s investigating the circumstances of the disaster and has dispatched a special team.

The incident is the first crash of an A400M. Television news coverage showed the aircraft, which carried the manufacturing serial number 23, completely destroyed and a large plume of black smoke rising over the scene. Photos supplied by the local government indicate the plane went down in a field, with wreckage strewn across a wide area and fire services on site to extinguish the blaze.

Actually, every other prob turns opposite direction.

Outboard props go inwards and down and inboard props go the opposite.

wow. this should help the pilotless-airliner crowd (not). If pilots in the cockpit (test pilots) couldn't resolve the problem, how would you do this from the ground ?

also, remind me to never buy a new Airbus concept/design until ??? 5 years of fleet usage

For the for seeable future tactical flying probably be under dirty, sandy, nasty conditions, does not bode well for such an electrical, mechanical prima-donna.
