This is very hard to believe that the kid got the turbine to light.

Unless the kid had seen it done before.

He probably just got the Mains to start to rotate.

I though the report sounded a little inaccurate.

The FAA reported that a 17 year old was at the controls.

Federal aviation investigators said they have determined that it was a 17-year-old — and not a much younger child — who started a helicopter while the aircraft was on display over the weekend during an air show near Mankato, a U.S. agency spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Teen, not young child, cranked up copter in Mankato, FAA says - StarTribune.com

I hope somebody had the presence of mind to yell... "Hold the Mayo!"

Not good. My brother in law does static mil helo displays at events. This was years ago but he said it was ok for kids to sit in the seat and push buttons/flip switches etc. I don't remember if they pulled breakers or pulled the battery terminals but it was essentially dead.

Before leaving 2-3 guys would run their flows to ensure everything was back where it belonged.

I'm by no means a helicopter expert, but I have ridden in them a few times and I distinctly recall at least one being able to be "started" by just flipping two switches.

I'm no expert either, but FADEC, etc. does simplify things greatly on modern helos.

Right, FADEC could allow a one-button start (if battery master was on).

My SOP for an air show is:
Step 1 disconnect both batteries
Step 2 get ready for all the kids!!
Other than flying that was another fun part of the job,
