American Airlines captain dies at controls
Condolences to the man's family. Kudos to the FO and Flight Attendants who attempted to keep him alive.
An airline captain has reportedly died at the controls despite a flight attendant with medical training trying to revive him. In a recording, the first officer is heard radioing in the emergency to ground control explaining that the captain has become 'incapacitated.' American Airlines flight 550 was en-route to Boston from Phoenix earlier this morning when the pilot was taken ill at the controls. An air stewardess - apparently a former nurse - fought to save his life but to no avail. |
Man that's sad, no chance to say goodbye to anyone...

Let it go, Joey. Age 60 isn't ever coming back and Age 67 is coming down the tracks like a freight train. And you're going to "get screwed" again. LOL! |

Why? So you can grind your "Age 65" axe again? What are you going to say when turns out he was under 60?

And when they completely delete mandatory retirement age (as Canada has!), your head will explode!
BWAHAHAHAHA! |

What's the alleged poor retirement planning? |
RIP to the American Captain, condolences to his family.

Wow the press sucks, I read that headline, "planes drops", and then they say the FO panicked on the radio, yet on the actual recording, he is very calm. smh.
|
Blue Skies, Cap'n!! Media: "Thank God the COPILOT (emphasis added) knew how to fly the plane!! Or, that Autopilot could land the plane! (No Cat III)

Honest question:
What was his age? |

Who cares? The man is dead. How about a little compassion for his family before you start using him to justify your "I got screwed by Age-65" whining. |

You're such a Toolbag, maybe some of us have young families and are concerned with our own mortality. My curiosity has absolutely zero to do with age 65
That's B.S. and you know it. You just HATE being called out on it BEFORE you could mount up on your high horse and start pontificating. I'm betting he was younger than 60, so there goes your entire argument. Sorry, Slick. |
Wow, someone dies and guys want to argue about something completely irrelevant to the actual article. Unbelievable! RIP Captain!

I'm curious on age too. Not for politics, I just scheduled a cti scan a bit ago.
|
Pilot incapacitations in flight is a serious matter, and I believe there have been a number of incidents/data points since the raising of retirement age. This is a worthy discussion, but yes, absolutely there is a personal side to each of these events. To that end, condolences to the family.

Maybe the ground based "cruise pilot" could have done an autoland. Or maybe not. This is the reason single pilot airliners are a long way off.

Pilot was 57.
"Lt. Eric Carr with the Syracuse Police Department confirmed to CBS News the 57-year-old male pilot was found deceased on plane at approximately 6:45 a.m. local time. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. He was taken to the county medical examiner. Autopsy is being conducted now, but there are no signs of foul play." Being that AA has a quite senior group he was a captain he was probably on up in age and most likely 55+ from the statistics I've seen. I just hope he didn't have young children. It's bad regardless. Any of us this could happen to, and as was mentioned before he didn't even get to say "good bye." |
I keep reading comments on other social media websites praising the FO for his job of landing the plane and everyone keeps commenting on how this guy deserves a raise and upgrade to CA. As much as I would love to hear about something like this for the FO... I foresee it being a very unlikely thing bc isn't it the right seater's job to know how to handle such emergencies and take the necessary steps to get the plane on the ground? So basically will this guy just get a pat on the back and that's it, or is there a likely chance this guy may get some type of boost in his career? Condolences to the family and may the CA RIP!

Seriously???? Dude, no one said anything about age 65. You call those that ask "toads"? The question they ask is fine.
So all you Age 65, "Get out of my seat!" cry babies can stick that in your pipe and smoke it. All you boys who want stricter medical standards should also be careful what you wish for. YOU could be the poor schlub with a medical denial as easily as an old guy. |

I'm guessing that you are a very popular guy to fly with.
And as far as your "guess"...that old saw is the first thing people toss out when they realize they can't win the debate. I imagine you believe that one must adhere to APC "groupthink" to be fun to fly with. An erroneous assumption on a multiple of levels. |
