Quote: Save 6-10k a year on medical premiums, but lose out on 20-40k a year in direct contribution 401k without putting a dime in.
The Diamond plan for my family at Spirit costs me (round numbers) $4,550 a year.

My base salary as a year four Captain is $196,000.

YTD flying is less than 300 hours.

I've averaged 27 days off a month for the last four months.

My base 401k company contribution will be $19.4K.

Quote: Go to an airline if you want that. NJA pilots should fight for everything they want, shoot for the stars and hopefully hit the moon, and they deserve it. But I think too many pilots at NJA are trying to change a tigers stripes. NJA will never compare to an airline across the board. NJA will never be an airline. Heck look at NJA profits compared to even the crappiest airlines. Quarterly profits at Frontier are probably higher than annual profits at NJA. The money will never be there to compensate the same as an airline.

Also, let’s not forget that 3 out of 4 pilots approved the current JCBA. The pilot group chose keeping no medical premiums over potentially way more financially beneficial things, including going after an airline standard 401k. Save 6-10k a year on medical premiums, but lose out on 20-40k a year in direct contribution 401k without putting a dime in.

Yea I pay close to the same, a little under 5k for the wife and two kids included. I just wanted to overly exaggerate and still show the silliness of keeping the medical in the last CBA and potentially giving up tens of thousands of dollars annually in other compensation because of it.

Ditto. You do you.

I agree. That free medical was very expensive.

How do you average 3 work days per month for 4 months and still bring in 196k?

Must be on reserve. Which means he really only has 12 days off (or however many Spirit has in their contract) and then the company didn't use him for 15 even though he was on call. That's great if you live in base, but not so much as a commuter.

Total bs to say you only worked 3 days a month. Stupid

4 yr cpt is $200 an hour. 72hr reserve min pay. That doesnt equal 196K. Common core math?

Could be a host of things. Vacation, lots of premium pay trips, pay protected trip drops, smart bidding etc.

I am on 126/hr right now and will make a fair bit above that in annual salary, and even more if you include 401k. It’s all about the work rules.
