Aside from completely missing the point of what a vacation day is, would it in any way be financially pointless to pick up a GS on a vacation day? I have 20+ days in a row coming up and I have half of it booked for an actual trip. The rest I'll be sitting around home, most likely bored. I can figure out a way to occupy that time or pick up a GS if I'm really bored. As a reserve holder, I assume it would just pay at 100% above my projected pay for the month (approx 90 hours) and there would be no payback days?

I don't think you can fly on vacation. GS or otherwise.

But, wait until somebody more clued in than me responds before you bank on it.

I was always told the no-fly-over-vacation thing was to help reset FAR limits, etc. In other words, it helped the company. I'm in no way suggesting we get rid of that, but I am curious why we as pilots not want it? As far as I can tell, the company can't plan on us flying over vacatons, therefore, they couldn't really reduce the staffing needed.

Go easy on me. Just trying to fully understand the history and the potential impacts if for someone reason it changed.

The impact would be slower advancement. With 14,000 pilots even a small increase in average block hours flown can result in hundreds less Pilots required.

We as Pilots do not want this.

So was this a contractual "gain" back in the day?

Vacation has been no fly for at least the last 40 years. The company would love it if we could fly over vacation. Would provide additional manning for peak periods and irops they currently have to staff for. In addition the company would certainly use it against us in future negotiations citing the statistics of how many pilots choose to fly over vacation when they want to cut it.
We briefly had the ability to Presell weeks to the company that was granted as a manning concession. Thankfully we were able to claw that back.
The change we really need to make concerning vacation is making it all pay and credit. The company would need 300 to 400 more Captains overnight.
