Advocating for El Diablo...how many people have worn a mask continuously for hours at a time? The percentage is probably pretty low. I wore them quite frequently in over a decade working in EMS. They are very uncomfortable for any extended period of time. People become very claustrophobic in masks and even have the feeling of being suffocated. Will Bravo 6 want to face the PR nightmare for diverting a flight due to someone having a full blown panic attack? Will passengers be charged with a federal offense by not obeying crew member instructions to keep their mask on at all times? This is a very slippery slope we are headed down.

I commuted home on EWR DFW last week on AA. 137 people on a 737. Middle seats full. At least 95% of plane had a mask on and it stayed that way for 4 hours.

The email we received last night kind of addressed this. Passengers need to have it on to board the airplane. After that, they ask crew members to use discretion when enforcing this policy, and that they understand that it’s not possible to wear mask coverings all of the time. Im sure we’ll have a fair amount of mask shaming, which will lead to confrontations during flight. Also, you don’t have to wear a mask if you have an underlying medical condition that would prevent you from wearing one. HIPAA laws prevent you from having to disclose said condition...fwiw

That makes sense. It keeps the lawyers at bay. But it basically does confirm this is theater to provide the illusion of safety much like the TSA after 911. But I guess if it makes pax feel more confident about getting on a plane and keeping the airlines afloat. [emoji2379]

At this point, if it makes people feel more safe and we can fill these planes up, then I’m all for it.

I don’t care what song and dance they have to do to make customers feel safe flying again even if it’s an illusion. We’re witnessing now what happens when almost no one shows up.

After 9/11 some of the changes made by TSA were referred to as “security theater”. They were more about making people feel safe rather than actually making them safer. While masks will help reduce the chance of a person spreading the virus in the plane it is also “safety theater”. If it makes them feel safe and gets people flying, it’s a good thing. I’d be willing to bet you will see the other airlines follow JetBlue on this. Right after they notice our loads are higher than theirs on the same route.

Just have to love pilots. Not only can they fly jets, but they are also security and health experts! Just ask them, they'll tell you. Also great investment gurus, real estate agents and general life experts.
