Quote: Sorry, yes I can do better. He represents the state where you have to look at a map and check your watch to see if you are allowed to pump your own gas. You might be in a county where you are allowed to pump your own gas, a county where you are never allowed to pump your own gas, or where you are only allowed between the hours of 6:00pm and 6:00am.
Dude, why don't you quit your "muh freedoms!" ranting and listen to the experts like the state fire marshal. It's way safer to have trained a trained gasoline professional begin the process of refueling your motor carriage, then promptly walk 30 yards away to the other fuel islands and begin the same process on 4 other vehicles simultaneously. Just because you're a pilot doesn't mean that you know more than the guy who's been pumping gas for his entire career, or the STATE FIRE MARSHAL for crying out loud. Let the experts do their job!

A model from the petroleum dispensing institute at OIT in Klamath Falls predicts that if people were allowed to pump their own gas, there would be 700 explosions PER WEEK in the state. It's not just about you and your convenience!

That model seems questionable:

Abstract
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 117,000 gasoline stations in the United States in 2007. During 2004-2008, an estimated average of 5,020 fires were reported in and around these properties per year, causing an annual average of two civilian deaths, 48 civilian fire injuries, and $20 million in direct property damage. These fires include vehicle, structure, outside, and other fires. Most of the fires (61%) were vehicle fires, but the bulk of the property loss (59%) was a result of structure fires. These estimates are based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration’s (USFA) National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) annual fire department experience survey.
Keywords: fire statistics, service station fires, gas station fires, non-residential fires

The National Fire Protection Association thanks all the fire departments and state fire authorities who participate in the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the annual NFPA fire experience survey. These firefighters are the original sources of the detailed data that make this analysis possible. Their contributions allow us to estimate the size of the fire problem.
We are also grateful to the U.S. Fire Administration for its work in developing, coordinating, and maintaining NFIRS.

Just think if we kept everyone at home we could save those two lives!

I mean if it saves just 1 life it’s worth it so, TWO! That’s almost twice as much!

This is surely satire right? When I was 14 I was a gas station professional. Was in charge of the whole operation. Very safe.

Hilarious, although it seems some people thought you were serious.

In the same vein I agree with the senator above. We're supposed to be concerned about pilot jobs here. The correct position to take is maximum social distancing. I would say no more than 25% load factors just to be safe. Petition the government to have the taxpayers pay for the empty seats and get the entire fleets flying again.

Compared to the amount of money thrown around since this fiasco started the cost would just be a drop in the bucket.

This is amazing. I hate that some will miss the satire. 😂

yet in fairness, it wasn’t off by any more than a lot of COVID-19 predictions, including those by Neal Ferguson who was eventually kicked off the UK COVID Commission for breaking the rules he promulgated:

I think this logic works against the trumpian way of thought with regards to COVID, climate change, etc.

49.5 states and basically all other countries say it’s ok to pump your own gas and there’s a tiny hold out with their arms crossed, pouting, refusing to play along

It points to the unreasonableness of the holdouts, not the tyranny of experts

Or... Maybe it points towards the fact that "experts" aren't infallible.

Whichever promotes your agenda I guess.

Or artificially protects jobs.
