Why are people picking up OT with guys on the street? Asking for a friend...

don’t give me the work action excuse.

Because, I have bills to pay and I don’t like to live paycheck to paycheck.

If I trip trade down in value for, drop a turn, or Blue Falcon steals my nice 2 day for a 4 hour 4 day, I go below guarantee. Is there really anything wrong with picking up a turn to try to get back to guarantee?

Just to add to my previous post, I stand in unity with all the furloughed pilots

Tell your friend both (furlough and open time) are caused by mismanagement, and to mind her own business on what happens at The 'Voy.

An FO on reserve guarantee makes about $1000 per paycheck after tax, health, union, and 5-7% 401k deductions per paycheck. Is that reason enough for you?

I pick up OT because I like exchanging my time for goods and services (I don’t live paycheck to paycheck at base pay).

Have you seen some of the reserve lists?

If people who do want or need to work don’t pick up OT, people who don’t want to work will get JM’d.

There is no cost savings to the company in that case and an even further reduction in QOL.

Not everyone lives rent free in their parents basement. We all have bills. I don’t pick up OT hardly ever, but I’m not going to judge anyone for doing what they do because I assume they have their reasons.

I want to expand on my answer. Many pilots also have grown to a certain lifestyle that depends on a steady 10-15 hours of OT and the expenses that come with it. Not a great reason, but it's there.

One of my main reasons for not being against OT pickups is the company is not trying to save costs, it's trying to take permanent concessions. For example, we've had two bases full of pilots getting released a month at a time, on full pay guarantee. Why not offer a leave of absence every month for these bases? The other two bases have been zeroing out on reserves for the past few months weekly, while again we have had 2 bases full of pilots being released for the full month, who are then able to pickup OT on their days off. Why not offer any TDYs? None of it makes sense if a company is actually trying to save money, so I'll continue to operate as normal and pickup as I see fit until they actually come to the table with realistic cost savings measures.

Black lists are starting at other airlines with guys on the street for dudes picking up OT. Not saying that’s happening here, but be careful. That’s how UPS got all their pilots recalled a few years back, no one picked up OT and furloughs were recalled very quickly.

If you peer into history as well, it’s extremely frowned upon to pickup OT with guys on the street for those new to the industry.

Also Dave Ramsey is a great podcast for those that need help with their finances and not spending beyond their means..
