The people most likely to get exposed to covid have either already had it or been vaccinated at this point, so yeah I'd expect cases to go down. That doesn't mean the new variant is any more or less contagious, just that covid's (any variant's) best avenue for expansion has been largely blocked.

How can you say it is more contagious if less people are getting it, regardless of the reason?
