Quote: I guess I still don't get it. While I do understand that "seniority is everything", I don't get why it's important to know your particular seniority number on the Master Seniority List. How does knowing that number benefit someone? While it's fun to, from year to year, track where you are in the pile, and I guess it's good to know that you're been "movin' on up", it really doesn't help you in any discernable way. Bidding is bidding, either for aircraft seat position, monthly line flying, vacation, or training. Knowing your overall seniority number doesn't change any of the above. What changes the above, is what others senior to you bid, and what they then leave you to bid.
That's AllState's stand. Mine too. However, that didn't stop me from checking my overall seniority number.
If you input your seniority number into Fastbid and then download the "bid awards" after they come out you can see all the lines you could have held at that seniority. Good for reviewing your bidding strategy.

Also your seniority number does come into play at times. It shows you where you are in the overall pilot force. You are correct that what individuals bid and where you are in your seat is more relevant. I found my number useful to help determine where I might end up in my seat as the DC-10 and 727 fleets downsize and pilots come over to my "seat list." Another use would be for furloughs/recalls which I hope we never have to exercise.

And finally another use is figuring my relative senority when the practice bid comes out. I can figure out what seat to not bid for svt purposes.
