That said, if you play fast and loose with residency for tax evasion purposes, yes you can go to jail. CA has tax agents snooping through the garbage cans of LAX/SFO based pilots in Henderson NV, looking for evidence of residency or lack thereof.

Back in the 1990's I think it was a North Carolina Pilot was claiming his boat in Florida as his residence. When the NC investigator's checked him out they found he had a house in NC, his kids went to school in NC, and they went to Church in NC.
He had to plea bargain and pay a ton of interest and penalties to avoid prison.

Quote: Based off of coming from New Zealand and your desire for beaches/mountains, etc I’d recommend the Pacific Northwest. Similar climate and terrain to where you currently are. Politically, it goes from Portland on one extreme to most towns east of the Cascades being pretty conservative. Seattle has Alaska and Delta, Spokane isn’t a domicile for anyone, but relatively easy to commute out of. Lots of other towns that would work as well. Look at Couer d’Alene to get most of what you asked for.
Ya, I’d definitely look at Washington State. High Asian population so your wife won’t feel alienated, snow-capped peaks and salt water beaches all close by. Horizon and Skywest also have bases in state. Seattle itself is walkable with decent transit, but high crime/homelessness nowadays so I’d avoid it. The surrounding suburbs are quite nice but pricey.

Gig Harbour is the pilot ghetto, but check out North Bend if you want more mountains and the peninsula if you want more water. Skiing, scuba, and sailing all easily accessible. For more rural and affordable check out Ellensburg or anywhere east of the Cascades.

Quote: The Vancouver thing is real because you actually live in WA state. Just so happens there's a town with tax free shopping across the border, even the most totalitarian states cannot require that you stay home and shop in state (they would if they could, but constitution and all that). I know plenty of people who live there, for that reason (presumably they generally like PNW too, as opposed to FL or LAS).

Even PDX based pilots don't have to pay OR tax because the vast majority of their flying leaves the state. Probably 100% for mainline AS.

If you live in Washington but shop in Oregon you are supposed to pay Washington use taxes on anything you bring into WA. In practice of course most choose to simply break the law but I would not put high dollar purchases on a credit card! Washington property taxes are heart stopping to compensate for no income tax.

Hawaii. Hawaiian Airlines has a hub there and there’s mountains, water, lots of Japanese. Income tax is high, cost of living is high. Property tax is low but overall tax burden is high.
