"A commuter airline has filed 19 lawsuits against pilots who recently quit their jobs, suing them for thousands of dollars the airline says the pilots owe for training costs.

The company, Florida-based Southern Airways Express, is trying to enforce a controversial employment clause that has recently gained national attention. Known as a “training repayment agreement provision,” the clauses stipulate that workers will pay the company a particular amount of money if they resign before they’ve worked there for a set amount of time."

I mean, they DID sign a contract and agree to stay. I know a handful of pilots want Hawai'i but are sent elsewhere.

Hasn't Air Choice One and Cape Air gone after pilots too?

Sounds like the same group expecting their agreed-to college debts to be paid off by taxpayers. It wasn’t our fault you majored in social work and you can’t afford daily lattes at Starbucks. If you agree to an obligation that is spelled-out to you, perhaps you should follow-through with it like a responsible adult. Going to Southern to fly a Caravan was YOUR choice among many other flight-building choices out there… Don’t sign a contract if you are not going to follow-through…

pssh, the best thing about contracts is figuring out the loopholes that will get you out of the contract.

The count has grown to around 61 pilots being sued by Southern/Mokulele for violating their contracts. Whie I generally agree that one should fulfill your obligations, the number is excessive and makes one wonder why it's happening on this scale. What is happening at this company that makes one risk a lawsuit to walk away from the company? I've heard that they even sue you if you failed to qualify and that the traing program is very weak with a very high failure rate.

Enquiring minds want to know!

Signing a contract and leaving before the end of that contract is one thing. Signing a contract, washing out, and owing money is something else entirely.

How does one wash out of caravan or PC12 training that's the real question...
