anybody have any information on china airlines and EVA?

They both pay roughly $4000/month for First Officer and maybe $1000/month housing allowance. Upgrades at EVA are in seniority order and would be around 7 to 8 years, possibly longer. There was a report they had stopped hiring foreigners, but not sure. EVA has a pretty big bond that last 4 years.

China Airlines has a bond and lately has wanted a bank guarantee. That is a show stopper for most people.

To be honest they can be a good stepping stone to larger jets and better jobs if you can stick it out for a few years, but they certainly aren't a place you would want to stay long term. Too bad because Taiwan is a nice place to live.

I kinda understand how the idea of how training bonds work and why these airlines have them, but not the specifics... do you have to come up with the $20k in cash up front (or whatever it is for each company) or are you like borrowing the $20k from the airline as in an actual loan (that you need to pay back if you leave prematurely).. or how does it work???

A bond is simply a contract to pay them back for training costs if you leave within a certain period of time. It could be anywhere from one year to five years in duration. Actually it could be longer, but most of the foreign ones are three to four years. No money is required up front. The better ones are pro-rateable so they go down in value every month.

A bank guarantee requires you to pay money up front that is why they are more of a show stopper. The money stays locked in a bank account. If you leave within a certain period the airline gets the money.

Thanks to both of you for the feedback and the link. Not happy reading, indeed... I briefly met the Safety Director for the 777 fleet a couple of years ago at a USC Safety course; he discouraged me from applying even back then. He actually advocated applying to a direct competitor.

Ok, now out of the two Taiwan airlines, is China Airlines better? And will they pay you back for the bank gurantee?

I know Tyrolean Airlines is Austria will pay you back the money after you put it in the bank of their choice.
