Hello everyone:
I have my Instrument check ride this coming monday and all i m worried about is the oral exam! I can fly the heck out of my C-172 with G1000, but just nervous with the oral examination part. I have been reading the ASA's IFR Oral prep book and been able to answers most ?s with a little thinking while was doing ground work with my instructor. Since i have a a nice weekend coming up could guys please give me advise on how i should utilize this time more efficiently to ace the oral exam. Also i will appreciate if you guys could tell me if I will be ok knowing that ASA's prep book from cover to cover!

What did you guys go through on your oral examinations? Was it just something that was mostly related to flying or was the examiner trying to know if you were good enough to carry your IFR knowledge when you fly with the big boys!

All your suggestions will be greatly appreciated !!

If you have an ASA FAR, take a look at the first couple pages after the cover. It will give specific things to read in the FAR and AIM pertaining to each rating. I'd suggest giving that a look.

Just RELAX...study. The ASA oral exam guide is great, so that's definately a positive. Our examiners in our area hit on some of these areas; loss of communications, airspace, aircraft inspections (IFR), ice and weather, decision making. Any decent examiner doesn't expect you to know everything, but you should be able to look it up. If you have spent some serious time studying, you shouldn't have a problem.

also know your alternate minimums (i.e. 600-2 precision, 800-2 non-precision)

Know what to do in lost comms. I know you know the memory aids, but think through a few real-world scenarios about how you would apply those rules.

You'll never feel like you are completely ready for the checkride. Just as papatango269 said, the examiner doesn't expect you to have everything memorized. You should know where to find the answer though, whether it be in the AIM, FARs, IFH, or some other resource. One more thing...most examiner's really want you to succeed.

yeah i have been studying a lot especially on the subjects mentioned above. Also i read the PTS -the special emphasis area!

the day before your checkride, about 4:00 or 5:00 put the books away, and do something relaxing that has nothing to do with flying. Go bowling with friends, golf, drink a beer. At this point, you know what you know, and if you keep reading you're only going to start second guessing yourself.
