Oh brother. That lav servicing guy would probably give one of his testicles to change places with any of us.

So why don't you quit and be a lav service engineer! It will help pilots jr to you move up one slot up! You'll be missed for a brief moment but will be thanked later when they upgrade!

Quote: Did they lose the plot? I thought the reason for their existence was to protect us from security risks not to harass us. They've gone from keeping the bad guys out to taking away our bottled water, smelling our breath, making sure we don't offend them and monitoring our preflight checks....What gives?
About two years ago I overheard TSA agents talk to a rookie on the employee bus (I was not in uniform): "When you see a pilot out there remember, he might be a good guy BUT don't forget that 9/11 was caused by pilots flying into buildings..." I'm very proud of myself for containing my anger on that day...

Quote: I'm done in three years (age 60) and because of the hassles I will fly as least often that I can. Since TSA came on stream I've always thought that they were there to make life difficult for crew.
IF you really do retire at 60 you'll be a very tiny minority of the pilots out there...
Congrats and thank you at the same time...

Wish I could make the Thank You font larger...

This greatly deepens my respect and trust for the TSA!

Quote: I agree we shouldn't take a delay, but disagree that keeping them ignorant is the best approach. I've always found it better to work with a properly informed person than an ignorant one.

What we need, IMHO, is for ALPA National to work with the TSA/FAA on a clearly delineated policy about what to expect during these inspections/tag-alongs so as to avoid confusion and misinformation over the authority the TSA.
Agreed 100%.

Quote: One problem I have seen with TSA is they are trained to engage pilots in a conversation. This is to smell your breath for alcohol. To me this seems confrontational, especially since I know why they are doing it.
There's a two-fold problem here. Pilots are paranoid of TSA and TSA screeners are paranoid of pilots. We get nowhere by being paranoid of each other. Maybe the TSA screener is talking to you to smell your breath. Or maybe the screener is actually just being nice. I find if you smile and say "Hi. How're you doing today," you get snarled at less often. Usually if you treat someone civilly, they'll do the same back. And if they don't at least you know you're the better person for being nice/polite/civil/personable/professional. Confrontation very rarely enables progress. I understand it might be necessary sometimes, depending on the individual, but it's not the best path all the time.
