Employability question

Looking for some advice from those know more than me.

First, let's posit a world where the airlines are actually hiring.

So I'm looking at a military job I'd really like to do. As a bonus to me, I'd do some VFR only flying on the side. No IFR and prsumably my military IFR rating would go away. Almost certainly this will be my last job in the Air Force. Would the fact that I had no instrument flight in 2-3 years kill my chances at an airline?

For background I have 4,000+ in the T-37 and C-17. I'd still have recency of flight, but all VFR.

Thoughts? Help? I want the job but not sure I want it bad to kill all hope of airlines. Assuming they ever hire again.

PM Tweet46 and ask for some details. He was recently in your situation with flight screening in Colorado Springs I think - flying all VFR in single engine pistons and I know he was doing OK with the job search. I'll leave the details to him to tell but your situations sound like they have parts in common.

I think with your TT/Experience you'll be fine so long as you meet the mins in the last 36mo(or whatever time frame a given carrier will use). I do know that most applications as for your instrument/night totals in the last year(or whatever they choose to use for a time frame). Not sure if they use that to discriminate applicants or not. I would say that when the time comes to start hiring they will weed in the "most qualified" so the lack of current instrument rating/IFR flying may hurt you. Hard to say. Definitely a good question to ask HR reps at a conference if you choose to go or have a bud ask around at his/her airline. The only interview I had before all hiring stopped, it wasn't asked about at all.

Thanks for the vote of confidence USMC. Sputnik...I saw your PM and will respond when I get back to my hooch. BDGERJMN has boiled it down nicely...alot will depend on how desperate the need. My situation in a nutshell....Before the hiring crash, I was hired at CS and offered an interview with AirNZ with no IFR currency since 2000....8 years worth!! (staff tour and USAFA) I did have 500 hours of SE, day VFR in the past 3. Since then I have retired and worked at DOSS doing AFS and then was recruited to fly in IRAQ as a contractor from a couple of different companies. I took one of these jobs and am loving it...granted I've only been here a short time.
