Flight Admiral
Somebody once proposed that pilots who just couldn't bear to "hang it up" at age 60 be promoted to "Flight Admiral", given a fifth stripe, and allowed to roam the cabin and cockpit. They could tell old stories, complain about almost everything, take naps, and generally be ignored. But one Captain objected: "Wait a minute! That's what I do right now!"

So who's greedy?
I am torn on the age 60 thing. I sure as heck don't want to work past 60. Man if they let me I'd retire now. I have a bunch of things I could do with my time right now. Watch my grandson grow up, play a sh1t load of golf, ride the scoot. But if I did want to work past 60 and I could pass the astronaut physical, why shouldn't I be given the opportunity to do that? Tough question. The guys that say the age 60 guys are greedy come up with all the arguments. But don't their arguments sound the same. "If they stay till age 60, I won't be able to make my Captains pay until I'm 35, won't be able to buy the big house till I'm 40. Won't be able to start on my second family till I'm 50."

It may not be greed that makes pilots want to continue flying beyond sixty.
Some may have an one or more ex's that took more than their fair share of the retirement fund.
Some may have gotten a late start in the industry.
Others may have incurred major medical problems that cost a lot.
Ya just don't know.
I think that as long as they can pass the physical they should be allowed to continue flying.
Depending upon how much they do eventually change, it it will only delay younger pilots that equal amount of time to move up. Then they too will have the opportunity to fly that additional time. Or they can retire.
Noone will be forced to keep flying beyond sixty.

His complaint is not the lost income (he says he’ll do about the same), but that less experienced pilots will lower the level of “safety.” First of all, if it’s not written in a manual, or given to him in training, he’s as blind as an OLD bat! But mostly, the truth is he just hates loosing the power he feels when he puts on a uniform, flirts with the stewardesses, “steps on the gas” and has 200 million dollars worth of machine and passengers under his control.

It’s about TIME he slowed down, mowed his own lawn and talked to his mother!

Pilot Retirement Age
Why not base the retirement age on each individual’s golf score average . . . minus twenty . . . or thirty? Arbitrary is arbitrary, but at least those who want to keep flying can loosen up a bit on their swing and those duffers who want to retire can always “customize” their own scorecard.

Just FYI:

I think it is interesting to consider that American Airlines (APA) is one of the strongest AGAINST changing the 60, while Southwest Airlines (SWAPA) is one of the leaders in the fight to change it, and both for TOTALLY different reasons.

It will change, it is just a question of when.. In India for instance, they are considering making the age 95 in an effort end their pilot shortage..
