Quote: In Shanghai for a couple of days so we looked into a visit to the Expo. Day 3 200RMB plus 6RMB subway ride. OK so far... The catch is you have to stand in line to get ticket, THEN stand in line to get reservation to get in. Each pavillion has reservations to get in. Hotel can get package deal for 280rmb($40+) to get past the first line but all other lines apply. When we drove by yesterday on the bridge we could see that approximately one third of the country's population was already there. This makes the disneyland lines look good on a busy day. Maybe it will get better in a few months but for right now it is more fun to be harassed by the vendors in the 580 market. Now for the really fun news.....Security is really tight throughout Shanghai. Xray machines to EXIT the airport, xray machine and real police to enter the layover hotel(UPS/FDX) and can I mention the 200km airspace restriction and heavy air traffic? The wx is great in AK and I can bid to avoid this place til December. Sorry to rain on the parade Vagabond. Death BY Meat (Brazil steakhouse) tonight!
China at its best...lines for lines....LOL

I'm going today. It is now 10am local time and getting ready to leave for expo with no tickets, so let's see what'll happen. I am going to enquire about the hotel package and see if I can circumvent any lines. This trip was a surprise for me, one guy banged in sick and I replaced him. The one nice surprise was that we landed at ZSSS, the old main Shanghai airport. In and out in a jiffy.
I'll let you know how the expo turned out when I get back.
There was one different thing ATC did. As you approached Shanghai airspace, after you checked in with the controller, they asked if everything was alright. Taken aback I queried the controller, and when he replied he wanted to know if we were ok and everything was alright. Since I sensed a new warming of relations with western pilots and Chinese ATC, I said I was a little worriedabout my Bruins playing the Flyers tonight after losing 3 consecutive games. After a lengthy pause he wished me luck. Apparently bad luck because they lost.
But they were asking this question to all aircraft when they checked in.

You cant surf porn in China!! And, balut......ya got to be kidding! Got one down the first time I tried it (with a little help from a strong drink!) and the second time it hit the gag reflex. I didnt seem to like the semi crunchy nature of the delicacy. Yummie.

I hope you're joking about being "taken aback" becuase of the different thing ATC did as you approached Shanghai airspace. The security requirement and new communication procedures are in the NOTAMS.

I like (note the dripping sarcasm) this paragraph from the article.

Anyway, it's still early days and perhaps the crowding and such will dissipate with time. Wonder what kind of household animal they will offer up in June and July after all the dogs have been rounded up? frozenboxhauler, you can find out for me.
Up-Date... "Gerbil-On-A-Stick" appears to be a popular item here. Much like "Gerbil-On-A-String" is in San Francisco, but for different reasons.

Shanghai Expo 2010
The Expo is very easy to reach via the subway line 7. There are at least two or three stops that will take you to an entrance. Yaohua Rd South will take you to the main entrance. If you exit the subway at Houlan South a free bus line will transport you to the South entrance.

There is free transportaion via green vehicles to many exhibits. Long lines unless you arrive early. Wear your walking shoes. Expect 20 to 40 minute ques at the most popular exhibits. Entrance fee is 160RMB and 100RMB for those over 60. Key seems to be visit the Expo several times to enjoy the exhibits. Be sure to grab the free official maps once inside. Worth at least one or two trips. Be patient with the security, worse than the TSA!!
