How do you go about getting your type for a civilian equivialant? There is a guy charging people a few hundred bucks to get them their Beech 400 type at UPT for the competency exam and the type, and as far as Im concerned you can just go to your local FSDO if you already have comm/multi/instrument and dont need to take the competency exam. I will be getting the Beech and then the DC-10 eventually, and don't want to pay someone to walk into a FSDO when I can do it myself. Any help? Thanks

At Columbus there was a guy who was a sim operator and local FBO operator who did the test prep, administration, and FSDO stuff. He got us the info as we got closer to T-1 graduation. I don't think it was expensive. Did a half-day study session with the guy, took the test in like 10 minutes, and I got the commercial pilot, multi-eng commercial, and instrument ratings added to my private privileges.

Still don't really know what all that means...

You may have trouble getting your Beechjet type from a FSDO not familiar with the UPT process. Your best bet would be to go to the FSDO local to your UPT base as they are the ones with the Letter of Agreement to give the Type Rating to recent UPT grads.

You should be able to get your DC10 rating from your local FSDO when you complete your PIQ checkride and have 10 hour in the jet.

The difference is that for all other types not obtained via UPT, the process is standard at all FSDOs, you'll just need an ARMS printout and Form 8.

For the Beechjet type, you won't have a Form 8, but rather a graduation/training report from UPT that the FSDO local to the base knows how to interpret. If in doubt call ahead to the FSDO and make sure they know how/are willing to help you.

This is what I was told from people at other UPT bases, that they had no problem getting it at the FSDO with the graduation report and I think an 8710 or some simliar form. I am aware of the guy at CBM charging to do this for you which is why I am asking if anyone has done it on their own, but I did find out it is very possible to do at a FSDO for free rather than a couple hundred dollars. I havea commercial multi instrument just need the type add on, I dont need to take any tests. Ive never paid for add on simliar at the FSDO, they just need the paper work for the additonal rating. At Laughlin people paid for the test but still had to drive themselves to the San Antonio FSDO to complete the process. You definitely don't need this guy to do it if you're not taking the Mil-Commercial written.

Had a similiar thing happen years ago as I was getting ready to retire from the military. Back then you had to get a permission slip to take the ATP written and flight exam. Went to the Atlanta FSDO with my Form 8 that showed over 6000 hours of KC-135 time. The young guy in the office asked me where my cross country time was!! Had to point out several flights in excess of 8 hours that crossed the Atlantic and the Pacific. Finally an older gentleman came over and explained what a KC-135 was and told the young guy to give me the forms. Sometimes the military to civilian doesn't translate very well.

Call your local FSDO and schedule an appointment. They don't take walk-ins. Make sure you bring two types of ID ... they might require a passport. Just ask them when you call. Fill out the paperwork which is provided in the lobby.

Bring your HARMs/SARMs Flying History Folder showing at least ten hours of flying time as an AC/IP/EP in the aircraft that you want typed in. Make sure you bring copies of your Form 8s to show that you had checkrides as PIC.

When I went to get my Beech 1900 type, the check airman looks at my flying time report/history and proceeds to methodically add up 10 hours of flying time as PIC. There were at least 3-4 pages with a couple of hundred hours showing PIC time. The guy insisted however ... 1.2 hours Ok. 1.2 +1.4 = 2.6 hours. Ok 2.6 + 1.3 ... and so on. I was laughing it was so funny.

Philadelphia FSDO said NO problem giving me the type... These kids are paying an arm and a leg for something free. Thanks guys for the help!
