Had a sim event with a former USAF IP who did a year with this operation. He called the training base, "The Del Rio of Afghanistan". Said even the locals consider it "Way out there".

Having spent 4 prime years in Del Rio (when I was 22-26 years old), let me tell you: I had frickin' blast.

There are those that go there and b*tch about it the whole time.

And there are those that go there to make the most of everything that is there.

Shindand is a far cry from Del Rio.

Huggy,

There is a huge difference between being a UPT student there and having fun for a year and raising a family in that hell hole for 6 years. Glad you had fun, but I've yet to meet someone who really thought that base should have been left open instead of Reese.

Well, Jughead... I cannot argue your points about raising a family there,... although I'd take it over Compton, and many other places in the US.

If we would simply work a deal to use Mexican airspace for the MOA's, it would be a pretty good setup for UPT. Not sure why we haven't done that.

I really would not want to work over Mexico, unless it was a high area and single ship Instrument lesson. That way there is less chance of a mid air and I would have the ability to glide back to US airspace, if the engine quit. I would not want to punch over Mexico these days. We would need blood chits for the cartels, if we wanted to see the USA again. Besides now that UPT schedules are about 50% of what they were back in the day, we rarely run out of working areas.

You're talking about a country that attempted to ground US airline pilots because they didn't have an "English Proficient" endorsement on their FAA certificates.

You'd have to think when you factor in security concerns that it would be cheaper to train Afghani pilots here in the US than send us there to train them. That would be a real double whammy. Here in the US your students try to kill you in the air all the time. Over there you get the bonus of your students trying to kill you in both the air AND on the ground. Where do I go to never effing sign up ever?

Whatever it is, it's not enough! I'd have to be really hard up for cash before I would go back to that place, especially Shindand.
