Years back I was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anc. The winters were a little long; but, they were fun. While in a place where the winters are 7 months long, you have to make the best of it. Snowmobiles and skiing are the best way to pass the long winter months. Snowmobiling in the springtime is the best Fishing in the summer and fall is absolutely amazing. I actually go to Alaska about three times a year: Late March (to go snowmobiling), July (to go sockeye fishing on the Kenai River), and October( Steelhead fishing on the Anchor River). If it was not for my wife's job, I would still live there and commute to work. We actually still own a house in a town called Eagle River. We rent it out now and plan to move up there for the summer months; after we retire. Eagle River is a bedroom community to Anchorage and is about 12 miles north of Anc. Eagle River is a gorgeous community of about 40k people. What can I say, I love Alaska

I love ANC. Not the town so much, as where its located. I'm just a lowly 207 driver, but I've flown a little all over the continent and I like it here best. Many come up here and stay because the flying is so great. That being said, it wouldn't be worth living here if I didn't have a plane to go slam around the bush in. Right now its DUMPING snow, and I'm getting paid to watch it and shop for new toys to use in it.

I know, or used to know, a UPS guy that lives in Anchorage that must be stoked its going so junior.

Yes, Yes, Yes...we are currently training probie ANC MD11 FOs, and I've been told that we will train HUNDREDS of them in the next two years if this trend continues.

Pardon my ignorance, but if you bid or get assigned ANC as a new-hire, is the company requiring those guys to move there? Just curious. I realize, it's a hell of a commute from most places, but just wondering if they even give you the option. I'd be doing out of ORD, and i don't think it would be that bad, but have no clue....

After doing some research UPS started in 1907. There was a company called Blue Air Label Services that started air freight in 1945. In 1982 that company became UPS 2nd day air. In 1975 it is possible UPS was using Blue Air Label as that was when UPS started serving the 48 contiguous states. But I don't know. Google searching on Blue Air isn't working so well. So it's fact it started flying in 1982.

Actually, in 1988, UPS received permission from the FAA to operate its own airline (as opposed to leasing), known as UPS Airline.
