No one loves ANC
After the last System Bid, UPS was short 60 FO's on the MD-11 and 18 FO's on the 74-400. No FE's one wanted to go up there for the up-grade.
20/80:12/30. This sould get interesting. All New Hires going to ANC. I think UPS needs to give a Cost of living increase like the managers get. This may help.

Lemme see, a brand new newhire flying with a new MD-11 captain out of Anchorage, this outta be interesting. Some of the most challenging flying in our system with our most junior folks is a recipe for problems.

Anchorage has a lot to offer. Awesome fishing, world class hunting, great beer, midnight sun for grilling in the summer, a bit cold in the winter. You can't have everything. It is by far the most fun I have ever had living in a place. Very few of my friends go on vacation out of the state in the summer since the recreation is everywhere. In the winter we all go to Hawaii.
JMHO. Don't knock it until you try it.

A number of years ago at FedEx, after the Tiger merger, the company took about two classes of new hires and put them directly into the back seat of the 747, based in NYC. They were a lucky bunch indeed, as like New Jersey, Memphis sucks. However, back then, we didn't have any probation. That came with unionization. A rather good thing IMHO.

Guys I am not bad mouthing ANC. Been there a dozen times and had some good times. Been there at least once during all 4 four seasons. The cold was just too cold. TOO cold for me. But I always found warmth at the Great Alaska Bush Company!! NJ isn't that bad. You have to go outside of the EWR area and you would be in shock at what you see. Farm lands, small towns were people walk to the bars and church. I guess we will wait and see what happens with the new guys.

I don't hunt, I don't fish, and I hate cold weather. That being said, I will jump at the first possible class that UPS offers me...ANC be dam*ed, full speed ahead!!
I look at it as an outstanding opportunity to fly MD-11s or even possibly 747-400s to the Pacific rim. I haven't flown over there since I flew C-130s, and am looking forward to it again.
