Sequence Protection for LUS pilots

Hopefully this won't turn into another JCBA/MTA yes/no debate.

After reading the MTA, I was under the impression that we would be pay protected for trips canceled due to WX, even if the trip cancels before we report for duty. Then I read this (see below) off the APA website today and interpret this paragraph to mean that if my trip cancels BEFORE I report for duty (ie sign in) that I will not be paid. ***?!

Maybe I get paid because it's my last trip of the month, which is better but still $h!ty. If my interpretation is incorrect please tell me...if im correct, please tell me this is changing eventually, and when.

My situation is that I usually commute out a day early and actually tried to go out two days early but was unable. My flight is on Wednesday and is Shuttle work which I think will get canceled. I don't want to waste a day and half commuting out, only to not get paid.

Here is the paragraph:

For US Airways East pilots, "the Company shall provide pay protection for any trips cancelled after a pilot reports for duty. Should a pilot's trip sequence be interrupted or cancelled, the pilot will remain available for rescheduling during the footprint of the original cancelled trip, and will be paid the greater of the value of the original scheduled trip or the value of any rescheduled trip. With crew scheduling's concurrence, a pilot may elect to waive this sequence protection at the time of interruption or cancellation and forfeit the pay protection provided hereunder. A pilot will also be pay protected for any disruption or cancellation of the last trip of the month (including a series of trips), including any disruption, cancellation or removal from a trip (or series of trips) due to legality issues and the pilot will remain available for rescheduling during the footprint of the original trip (or series of trips) cancelled or removed."

Again, not looking for a JCBA debate.

Thanks

Really? No answer on this? I guess it shouldn't surprise me as most captains I've flown with didn't even know that the MTA finally provided sequence protection to them.

Al,

I read the same paragraph, so my question is, if the trip cancels BEFORE I report for duty, am I not paid? Seems ridiculous to me, but obviously shouldn't surprise me with this company. I was hired after the MTA so have always used that for contract questions, unfortunately lots of it hasn't been implemented yet.

As said, call the contract hotline. These provisions changed for LUS recently so you won't find a lot of "institutional knowledge". I read it as you do... You don't get paid for cancellations before you report for duty, unless it's the last trip of the month.

Similar question on my part, two back to back 2 days, end of the month. The first one gets extended to a 3 day and kicks me out of the second 2 day. Do I get paid the original value of both trips? Just the 3 day? The 3 day plus the 2 day (double dipping)? My interpretation is I'm protected for the original value of the 2, 2 day trips (or what's flown, whichever is greater).

What if the last trip of the month is one you picked up off the bid sheet and then it was canceled prior to you showing? I assume you still get paid since it is last trip of month?

The MTA does provide for pay protection even if the trip cancels before report, but, like most anything else that favors the pilots, that provision hasn't been fully implemented yet. The protection for sequences that cancel after reporting is an interim step toward full implementation of the MTA.

ackattacker - To your questions, I believe you're correct... you're pay protected for the original value of the 2 2-day trips. The existing protection for LUS pilots on the last trip of the month is not actually the last trip, it's the last series of trips. You could have 5 1-day trips in a row, and they would all be covered by that protection as long as they are the last days of work for the month.
