Quote: I am a very junior 757 FO. 100th percentile type. I bid and hold usually my 4-5th choice of A reserve. I live in Collierville and fly an average of 5 days a month. Mostly out and backs with an occasional day in a hotel. I can't remember the last time I flew on a weekend. The other 10 days of reserve are at home with my kids. Life is good... YMMV...
The key part of your statement is that you live in Collierville (Memphis). You live in domicile so more than likely don't ask to first fly. I would guess most commuters put in for first fly on most R Days.

I thought the key part of his statement was the implication that there are an awful lot of VTO bidders in front of him. That aside you would be crazy not to consider Collierville base housing if you were hired by FDX today and not going to a FDA.

I first fly on occasion. Doesn't change how much I work. I use first fly to level out so I don't work later on in the month. You'd be surprised how much of the first fly is done by local guys. I just moved here this past summer after commuting for almost 2 years. The amount I fly hasn't changed. The amount of time spent with my family, sleeping in my own bed, and enjoying my life has risen exponentially. Saying Collierville or Germantown is Memphis is not a fair statement. I live 30 minutes east of the airport. If I didn't watch the news at night, I would never know Memphis and its issues existed. Completely different when it comes to education, finances, etc. Most of my neighbors are non-FedEx transplants from around the country. It isn't as bad as many would have you believe. Do I miss certain things. Sure. Would I trade my current work/home life balance to get those things back. No way. Commuting sucks no matter who you work for.

I meant "Collierville (Memphis)" for those not at FedEx yet, so they would know where we are talking about, not to slight Collierville. That's where I would probably live if I lived in domicile.

Only flying five days a month while sitting Reserve A ? As all other things here, enjoy it for now, will not last.

Don't come to the bus.. The only way to fly just 5 days is to have vacation!

I use to be on the Bus. I just looked up my calendar out of curiosity. I didn't fly much more on the Bus. About 6-7 days a month. I bid back to the Bus in the last round. We'll see...

They only way to compare apples to apples is compare line pilots schedules. Not everybody can be on RSV in Memphis or a Flex. The day to day schedules are a bear. My commuter buddies knew that in the mid 90s and have endured a furlough or two but are now flying during the day with occasionally their families in the back to enjoy a nice layover.

New hires at DAL are getting wide body FO pay and can commute from home the day of a trip rather than coming in the day before. They can also under certain circumstances pull reserve from home....can't do that at fedex since they just assign you a hotel standby.

Then you haven't been on bus since October. Because it hasn't let off since.
