It will take 2-4 months to process your paperwork and ground school, and then you will spend a year + in line training on a 737. Then you fly as captain for a year. Then say pretty please can I be a 787 captain.

So no, you will not apply to be a 787 or 330 captain after a year. It will be 2.5 to 3 years.

Then, if you are accepted, you will try to get through 330/787 transition. A contract agency told me 2 years ago the first 8 guys on the NTR 330 failed.

So you are the 1 in 10 that passes this. You spend another year in line training. After that, you are a junior captain (cruise pilot) for 1-2 years)

An extremely low percentage of pilots pass the initial interview in China. Maybe half that pass make it to pass a line check. Half finish their contract.

I would bet Hainan has exactly zero pilots that showed up NTR on the 787 and are flying as a line captain. I heard only a few have ever passed and made it all the way to PIC on the 330.

This is a pipe dream.

If you want to fly in China, good luck. Be flexible and happy that you make it. Dreaming about some mythical pipe dream of going from 500 PIC in a 737 to a 787 Captain with a reverse roster based in YVR is a waste of a perfectly good dream. Better off buying a lottery ticket.

It might happen to somebody, but it will be just dumb luck.

Thanks Probe, you nailed it.

The only successful NTR guys I know are the B777 guys who went to China Southern on the B787. Also one B747-400 guy who went to SF Express on the 757. I think some China Airlines (of Taiwan) 747-400 drivers also went to SF Express on the 757. There might be others, but it is rare.

I know 2 guys went from 737 to 787 at Hainan. They did not work at Hainan prior. I also know 5, yes 5 guys who went to CSA on the 777/787 and were 737 guys before. HNA is beyond desperate for pilots. That's not true about it being a pipe dream. I'm in China, I've seen it and I personally know and worked with these guys

My agency confirmed yesterday that Hainan is still offering the commuting option for the A330NTR program.

Right after I posted that I got another email from my agency. The 4 weeks/4 weeks option is still available, but they will no longer allow 2 weeks/2 weeks.

So, is this 787 NTR not really attainable? I'm new here, and suppose to go to China for an interview. Am I wasting time here? Any info and would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks..

99.9% chance it is not attainable, based on Hainan Airs past track record. But hey, you could be the first.

It will only take a year or two of your life to find out.

Hi all,

Quick question. I have the chance to go an interview for the DEC 787 position with HNA. (Coming off the 777 from a Middle East carrier). From what I have read on this thread, it seems like most aren't making it through the training program or the interview process in general. Is it worth effort to even try? I have heard mix things about how they accept 777 time towards the 787 even though the license shows 777/787. Any current info available? Interview info?

Thank you..
