Hello everyone. Long time poster, first time reader in the forums. I am 24 yrs old and am considering a career change into aviation. Based on what I've read (on apc and elsewhere) it seems the best way to get my feet wet is to get my PPL at a local FBO or something before committing to doing a full-on flight academy like atp (which I've heard very mixed reviews about).

That said, I currently live in Charlotte and am wondering if anyone familiar with the area has any flight schools they recommend. Also, any additional advice you would have for someone in my position would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Go to ATP in Concorde, you'll be at an airline in a year or so if you do it right. It's pricey, but you get your stuff done fast.

You think a person is going from zero to hero and then 1465 hours or so in one year? Yikes... Ratings and instructing to 1465 will most likely take 2-3 years. This is just the experience among peers instructing in Phoenix, Arizona.. Not saying it can't be done I'm just saying realistic goals are best set up front and if it happens to work out better than that's the best anyone could hope for.

I have been searching various threads regarding ATP for quite some time now. I actually visited the facility in Concord and liked the atmosphere. It seems this one may be slightly smaller than the other locations, and winter weather could also slow the training process a little.

Nonetheless, I keep circling back to ATP when looking for a place to take me from PPL through commercial. When comparing options, I could probably save a little by purchasing a small plane. The problem here, of course, would be mx issues that can quickly wash away savings. Part 61 schools could also save a little by piecing together the training, yet you may lose time in the process. All of these decisions come with pros and cons. It seems there is much negativity regarding ATP, but I feel that it should be taken with a grain of salt here. In my case, it continues to be a good option for a career change in my mid 30's.
