IPads Please!!!
Announced Oct 18th, delta will switch pilot EFB’s to iPad Pro. Which leaves SkyWest Inc. as THE ONLY company that I’m aware of that use these complete P.O.S. Surface Pro’s. Think we will follow suit?
|
You probably won’t have a choice. The only reason Delta is making the switch is because Jepp told us they will no longer support the Windows OS.

I heard they are rolling out a new EFB in Q1 2018.
Yes, it's still a microsoft product. |

Uh. When did we get surface pros?
|
The tablet releases and opening and closing of a flight are a complete joke. The POS takes half a quick turn to find connection and then other half to open the Jepp app. Meanwhile Chiefs are chasing down CA's who fail to use this awesome software with the magical Microsoft product. I would love to have a release and relevant weather information easily appear.
|
Meh,
The Microsoft product stinks and changing routine isn’t fun. But I’m getting used to the new routine and starting to enjoy electronic everything from releases, Can stuff, manuals, and charts. Once the aero data switch gets flipped say goodbye manual manifest when ACARS is inop. I have no idea why someone thought we should need to close out the EFB. I’d welcome iPads, but would keep Microsoft over going back to paper. Did you Dotcan Dotdid |
As pilots were good at “making it work”. If we delayed evey flight 1hr do to the Surface problems. I guarantee ipads would be around the corner...

Now onto the actual topic... Yeah I had heard that Jeppesen wasn't going to support microsoft so I'm hoping that they don't instead switch to a different map vendor. Word around the camp fire is they got their feelings hurt because Apple wouldn't hook them up with a deal for 4000+ units. I had the president of SkyWest Inc. in my jump seat last year and he asked me my opinion on the Surfaces.. I made it clear that the software was fine but the hardware was a joke and sited many examples of problems that myself and pretty much everyone else was having, if you have one I'm sure I don't need to list any of them. Realize that this stuff occurs below his pay grade, but I got to ask the guy what kind of computer he uses at home? (apple) and so the discussion got onto my opinion as to why we are using these P.O.S.'s and I had heard it was price, not only for the units but the software development as well. Mentioned that pretty much EVERY other airline uses iPad so its not like this is an impossible endeavor. So fingers crossed here :o |
Jepp FD sucks no matter what it's running on. It takes forever to load on my Air2. Wish Foreflight had an Airline version as it was leaps and bounds better than Jepp.
|
You are totally right on that one, I have both.

You kind of missed the point, that we bought the cheapest pos tablet that would maybe run the software we need.
Keyword, "maybe" ish... |
I find it ironic that we are not suppose to touch the FMS in critical areas but can dick with the surface wherever?
The surface is a total POS, I would never own one. That being said SkyWest is putting way too much activity on it and it’s just a slow death spiral until some one pulls their head out! I feel like I’ve been told to chop down a tree with a butter knife. I’m sure things would be different if the management that comes up with these retarded procedures actually flew the line once and a while! |

Not even close. The iPad destroys the Surface loading up Jepp. |
Don’t even dare load jepp without being in airplane mode. Ha

Does Skywest provide the Surface pads or do you have to purchase it yourself? How much are they?
Also, don't wanna hear any complaining. Try manual government pubs with gloves on, in a single seat jet, flying 300 knots, with no ICAO database, and no autopilot. :D |

It's been working pretty good lately, they must have fixed the ATT bug.
Yes I'd take an IPad first but can understand if it won't play with the MX side of the house. I also heard the Jepp is leaving windows rumor is false. By they way if your Surface has that nasty yellow screen edges problem, request a new one, its a Microsoft problem. |

Apple is terrible (typed on my almost 6 year old iPad).

From a XJT guy, the reason there is a bunch of problems with the Surface is simply because of Skywest. There are fixes for everything that you guys (and us) have, but Skywest decides what updates we get and locks it down to limited updates/control.
Once you're free from the skywest lock, the product is great. So you can thank your upper management for our problems. |
the product is great |

We got the bottom of the barrel in ram and processor. That’s why it’s as bad as it is. |
