The industry is facing a pilot shortage that hasn't occurred since the mid '60s. They are 2 generations of management away from the collective memories that remember how that one played out.
Buying a few sims may work for the military who just take C130s full of cash and lose them. Private industry is slightly different.

How did it play out?

In the '60s there was street hiring with wet instrument tickets. The guys were going to the panel so a FE was required, things are a little different today, but with 80k retention bonuses all bets are off. This is new territory.

UAL went to HS to recruit. They hired HS grads with PPL. They had them on the payroll, and trained them, then put them to work as Flight Engineers...then they worked their way up.

AA/UAL/DAL will have to either guarantee loans, or hire non-pilots, or very low-qualed pilots and train them...unless they can get the gov't or someone else to guarantee loans...and even guaranteed training loans may not get enough bodies into cockpits....

I'm pretty sure it's something like SkyWest leases them from FSI and has total control and use of them.

Chat with Jerry sometime, if you ask the right questions not covered by disclosure he is very candid.

Did they sell it like some kind of QOL? As for me, I get paid by the minute anyway.

More so if you've singed the NDA his attorneys have written up.

Hope it's not the typical 33 percent voter turnout!

It's already over 59%
I met one guy who was voting yes, had him educated in a couple hundred miles.

Hi Guys, currently approaching my ATP mins and looking to apply at SkyWest, but not too familiar with them. (grew up in the south) What are the junior bases a new-hire can expect to get? Average reserve times? And Im also curious since SkyWest flies for multiple carriers. Are trips exclusive? for example: you get a trip and fly exclusively on DLs routes? Or are they mixed in flying for DL UA AA all in one trip?

As with most things, there are pros and cons. SKW is one of the highest paying regionals out there, good travel benefits and good crews. We are in the middle of voting on a pay package that would increase 1st year pay to $30/hr with bonuses. The gripe some of us have is that it only gives a 50 cent or 1 dollar raise to the existing pilots and we feel that we should get a bigger slice of the pie. There are some other things as well, but that's the gist of it. ORD and MSP are junior bases (for now) and a new hire would almost instantly get a line there. Bases out west are somewhat senior and reserve time can be a few months or longer, depending on what domicile. Trips are not exclusive, I've done UA and DL in the same day. I did reserve in 4 bases and commuted in 2 of those. Commuting to reserve is the last thing you want to do. On the other hand, reserve at home was GREAT for me. I was home an average of 15-18 days a month. Busier months around 13-14 days.

All in all, if we all could go straight to a major or legacy airline we would. A regional airline is a stepping stone, get in get out...I chose SKW over Mesa and Republic mainly because of domicile options, company reputation and pay. Remember, attitude determines altitude, don't let other people color your perception...

Don't take the OPINIONS you get here on APC for face value. Do your own research...good luck!

How does IAH look for a new hire? Reserve time and months to hold it as a base? Thanks!
