Hiring habits.

For the current swa guys, where does southwest get most of its pilots aside from the military?

Generally other airlines. In my class of 28, we had 5 military guys, 2 corporate/fractional guys, and the rest came from various smaller and regional airlines.

For what it’s worth, when I interviewed last June, the retired chief pilot doing my logbook review said that they like to hire from SkyWest. I do not recall how or why that subject came up as I have never been affiliated with SkyWest aside from when I worked at ASA.

At this level, they want to see not only the competitive flying minimums, but experience in leadership positions. Chief pilots, department managers, check airmen, etc.

We do have many Skywest, but a lot of former Eagle/Envoy, CoEx, and Horizon folks were in my class as well.

For 2017 hiring it was roughly 1/3 military and 2/3 civilian. Concur with this^^^^. We had almost all regionals represented in our class of 28. Volunteer work, check airmen, well rounded are important parts as well.

In 2016 about 38% of people that left SkyWest went to LUV, only Delta had more. Obviously united didn’t hire much last year and AA is mostly flow / military so it’ll shift a little this year as UA hires more. I’ve heard from a LUV recruiter that they like SkyWest people, that being said I wouldn’t base my regional choice on that.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the replies.

I was told the same, apparently their cultures are similar and SWA likes OO’s training. I know swa dropped their PIC turbine from required to preferred, is LUV scooping up FO’s like delta is??

My understanding across the board hiring at the majors is that captains are the majority of new hires the most especially if you subtract FOs that get mainline jobs based on other boxes ticked such as military.
