Default Base

Sorry, I am asking even more rudimentary questions, as I am not even a pilot yet.

I live in Long Beach, California. My understanding is that Southwest doesn't have a headquarter. Then what's a base?

Can I get away with flying mostly out of Long Beach? Do I have any say as a super junior first officer?

Airlines have corporate headquarters. They divide the airline into pilot domiciles where pilots are based. LAX is a pilot domicile for SWA, with others such as OAK, LAS, PHX, DAL, etc.

Your seniority within the pilot group will determine your position in newhire training, what domicile you can be in, monthly schedule, vacation, upgrade, etc.

Hey guys,
I got a Oct 18th class date so I’m still a ways out, but I’m hoping to eventually be based in BWI. It will prolly take a few months to get BWI but I was wondering if anyone knows how the commute from ALB to BWI is? There’s a few flights a day but I don’t know how many other WN pilots I’ll be competing against for a Jumpseat

It won't be an issue. The big ones to avoid are MSP-MDW and SAT or AUS to DAL or HOU. Anything else is pretty easy as long as there's decent frequency (3 or more a day).
I would say 8/10 commutes I am in the back, and I have only missed one ride in 8 years from an online flight being full.

I wouldn’t worry about competition on that commute. The bigger challenge will be the lack of frequency.

Don’t forget that you can always fly into DCA from ALB and Uber/Lyft up or take the train from airport to airport (with a couple of changes).

Also, what’s the drive time? 4.5 hours? In a pinch…

Welcome. ABQ-PHX is another big commuter city.

Another thing to remember is that you can also request the “fourth” seat. Pilots (and others) are able to ride on FA jumpseats at WN. So even if both cockpit jumps are taken, you may still have a shot on SWA metal.

5 hours with no traffic.

Well, that’ll work if you HAVE to get to work after missing a flight or they cancel on you.

20+ new hires got bwi last round. Shouldn’t be a problem getting it on the first shot.
