Im a JB guy, but currently southwest is probably better for LAX. If the spirit/jetblue "merger" becomes a thing, I could see LAX being vastly improved for JetBlue. Hawaii flying is in the plans as well.

Yup, I fly maybe 3-5 days a month on reserve

My friends don’t want the merger to happen and would prefer to grow organically, but mgt is all in so you get what you get.
Boy, does THAT sound familiar!

I upgraded at 7.5 years—it’s coming down since then.

Seems for instance jetBlue’s upgrade is down to few months now. I heard a new hire “May 2023” just awarded captain.
Is SW still a viable option especially moving into an economic downturn?

It’s one thing to be “able” to upgrade, but it’s another thing all together if you “should” upgrade.

There is nothing magical about being a junior caption should an economic downturn occur. Hell there is nothing magical about being a junior captain even in the best of times without certain caveats being made.

Being a junior captain in the base you live in does have some value!

Agreed, living in base being one of the caveats. Often though, taking a junior CA award means a commute for most people.

Maybe….Junior is relative. At the legacies you can pretty much upgrade at any base quickly and you’ll be Junior. Here BWI and bases west of the Mississippi can be had within a few months DOH difference.

Whether or not you choose to upgrade out of your base and commute is your choice…likely you can hold your base within a few months. I would have bypassed had I commuted or couldn’t hold my base for QOL reasons. Rsv at home isn’t bad.
