A lot of folks don't know it but leather for jackets has different hide ratings based upon the region the cattle come from. Leather from cows from areas with lots of rain fall are soft and supple and are A-hide rated. Leather from cows in dry areas like the American Southwest and Mexico are tougher and are D-hide rated.

It specifically is in the contract in the event assigned seating becomes a thing.

12.G.6.b "deadheading Pilots will not be assigned a middle seat, a seat in the last row of the aircraft, or a non-premium seat, unless these seats are the only types available yadda yadda yadda"

Obviously last minute reroutes could be an issue. But even OALs allow for a middle seat to be assigned (at least United did, not sure if it changed in this new contract) for $100 I think.

At UAL, while a rarity, if a pilot is last minute booked in a middle seat(we DH in business/First), the pilot gets 50% add pay for that leg. Tad more than $100.00 bucks….

Its easy to get D-hide rated flying from time to time. You probably just need a can of Deja Blue
