I noticed this snippet from the article:

"Southwest cut 15% of its corporate workforce in February, as a part of its plan to reduce costs. This included 11 senior leadership positions. The layoffs are estimated to save $210 million in 2025 and another $300 million in 2026."

Yet three months later, magically SWA still gets pax to where they want to go without major delays and cancellations!

Trips here can’t end with one leg duty periods. You need to add BWI-ISP-BWI on the end of it to make it a true Southwest trip.

Think of all the additional west to east displacements that flying will require. OAK locals commuting xc to MCO to sit reverse.

The SWAPA email did say “If you live west of the Mississippi…”

"...not necessarily indicative of anything forthcoming".

We're not going anywhere. This management group doesn't have it in them.

Contract says if the PDEW on a cross border flight exceeds a certain limit we have to fly it with our own metal. I suspect this is just getting ducks in a row in the unlikely event that the Iceland flying is so successful that we are contractually required to fly it.

I hope they're thinking that far ahead anyway.

Like Zap said, I highly doubt this is indicative of anything other than having the ability to do something later. If you look at the vector the company has been on since 2013, they will eventually start serving destinations north and south of what they are doing now as well as have the ability to take over flying east and west that is part of codeshare/partnerships that exceeds pilot CBA limits.
In other words...nothing to see here. For now.
