Service workers are low income by choice. Why should I subsidize their poor life choices? I chose to study, work several jobs simultaneously and take out loans to get to my current income level. And now that I'm successful I should spend part of my income to subsidize theirs. I already pay higher taxes to support their poor lifestyle choices. Come on, this is 'Merica! Everyone can be successful! Leaving a tip is no different than welfare. The more I tip the more I'm encouraging them to not better themselves.

Btw: the preceding was a joke, I Tip generously.

That's one thing I cannot understand, some sandwich shop has a place to add a tip on the receipt, but Subway doesn't have it. What are they doing differently than the people who works at other fast food, for them to earn a tip?

I put a jar in the galley. More tips better landings.

I got halfway through that and thought, "God I hope this guy is joking."

Thanks.

I put a jar in the galley, and "primed the pump" with a couple of bucks in it. After three hours, I asked how much more money was in the jar. The F/A responded: "What jar?" :D

The DTW guys have to tip each way to and from work to airlines parking. Why are they forced to pay to get to work? I'm with the no tippers lets get rid of tipping in this country.

No one HAS to tip unless you're in group of x or more in a restaurant. If you don't want to, don't. You just look like a fool if you don't tip when it's customary to do so. Just because there is a tip box doesn't mean you have to. Some people like to.

I always add gas. And when I get close to the destination I go into a holding pattern. I pass the hat around in the back and say when it's full, we will land. And those with tight connections might want to put in a few extra bucks.

Is that you, Mr. Pink?

Of course I tip van drivers. I read an article a few years back about how Marriott reminded us to "Not forget to tip the maid." It made me sick. Why don't these billion dollar companies just pay their employees a fair wage instead of relying on all of us to pick up the slack. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/marriott-thank-the-maid/

Someone should show this video to Marriott. At 2:46 it talks about the Residence Inn by Marriott.

Ask your employer

It's fascinating how Americans are obsessed with tipping, especially flight crews. Tips are meant to be reserved for EXCELLENT service, not for general handouts. It's funny to watch flight crews doing more work to dig for a dollar than the driver did to get them there.

It's fascinating how cheap the brits and aussies are. Matter of perspective and culture.

It has nothing to do with being cheap. In their countries, stuff like tips and taxes are built into the price of the product. That way they don't have to waste their lives fretting about always having small bills on them or arguing with people over the internet about tips.

Tips are nothing more than a cultural brainwashing to pass the cost of paying the employee a proper wage from the employer to the consumer. Most Americans are pretty brainwashed in almost every aspect of their lives though. Nobody even cares to look up and figure out the fact that they have been brainwashed. Everybody just falls in line like they're supposed to, never daring to ask WHY?

Exactly. Driving the airport shuttle is a high-turnover job that is usually done poorly (long waits.) You might as well tip the rampers while we're at it. While all the crews on the van fumble for their dollar so they can appear righteous, I'm checking in and arranging my workout and dinner.

If you think when you wait for a van it’s the drivers fault you obviously haven’t got a clue. Btw you know you can take your own transportation 30min after block in right? That equates to less than 15 min on the curb. If you’re waiting longer than 30min from block in it’s on you.

And the tip should be at least $2 these days. I’m glad you’re the guy that stiffs the driver especially when it’s just the two of us most of the time. You’ve obviously never had a job that includes tips as part of your wage.

Do I think it’s a way for companies to push the cost of doing business on to the customer yes and it’s not how I would run a business but it’s how it is. I think tipping is out of hand yes and I don’t tip people that historically not been tipped (oil change), but the van drivers have been tipped since the dawn of time so I do. Standard $2. Make me sick because you don’t know how to drive $0. If it’s a short hotel van with 5-7 of us and I’m short I’ll drop down to $1. If it’s exceptionally good with quality non-nauseating driving $3-5. If you’re late it’s probably not you’re fault but I didn’t wait around and we are already on the way to the hotel, Spirit’s buying.
