Training Pay
 
I have an interview coming up, and I can't seem to find anything on traning pay on the forums here. Can anyone provide a realistic idea of income during training?

$1000 per month pay plus $750 per diem. If it goes up that’d be nice, just don’t plan on it.

We average a new CBA every 8 years. So if you found something 5 years ago, chances are it’s still the same. Even if it doesn’t cost the company anything, they’ll still be a PITA about it. But you’ve never had so many high fives on the house in your life!

Most likely. But there is a time limit to it; no contract in front of me but IIRC it’s 90 days. If you’re still not released from OE at that mark you go to guarantee (72 hours).

There's a game to play that can largely mitigate that where you sign up for catastrophic coverage for a month and then sign up for company COBRA (I think that's what it's called) in the final 60 days if you need it at any point.

It's been too long, but it works something like that and is what we did when we were in training.

I signed up for a high deductible private plan for 3 months to cover the gap. It was pretty reasonable but my wife had coverage through work and we didn’t have kids at the time so it was just me. It’s unfortunate that this is still an issue in this country and only appears to be going in the wrong direction now. Maybe one day we’ll join the rest of the industrialized world. Unfortunately until then you’re at the mercy of your employer and Spirit certainly isn’t ever going to do the right thing.

Yeah, nice looking out ALPA. Hope they addressed this in the new TA or get a tounge lashing for missing an opportunity to fix the issue.

The trick I played was carrying my previous airline coverage into the first 30 Days of Spirit employment followed by the 60 day grace period to signup for COBRA after the termination of our insurance.

Shouldn’t have to play tricks at a respectable Airline gig.

People may not think first year pay, training pay, and new hire health care are voting issues but I certainly do. I don’t want to fly with misfits and would rather attract quality applicants

Perhaps you'd like to be taxed at over 55% of every dollar you make like the rest of the industrialized world. Free healthcare aint free, that money has to come from somewhere and it aint "Obama Stash".

Only in America can you be at poverty level and still have a TV and a phone and a place to live. If people are responsible with their money, they'll be fine. I went through 2 bankrupt now defunct airlines, a corporate pilot layoff, and 6 years as a CFI and I am doing just fine. It's all personal responsibility. When I couldn't find work as a pilot, I dug ditches for the water company. I pumped gas. I fried burgers....whatever I had to do I did it and was sparing with what I spent. Anyone can do it. Everyone wants to blame someone else for their own situation and expect someone else to bail them out of it too.
Aviation is no different. If everyone acted and spent responsibly they'd see that they have only themselves to blame. Of course there are exceptions but I'm sick of people wanting to turn us into another country, If its so awesome somewhere else, then GO somewhere else.
Now, back to our regular program.

He was talking about bankrupting people to give them medical care.

Btw most places with universal healthcare spend less per capita than we do in the US. Why? It’s not a profit center for hospitals and insurance companies.

Anyway, the topic is the company not providing health insurance to new hires for 90 day. What’s the point of that, really? It’s pretty unethical imo.

We don't need to "turn into another country", we just need to evolve without destroying ourselves.

Our stories sound familiar, but why should others have to live it? Why wear it like some sort if medal, it's just life, let's learn from it.

That's my point. Learn from others and plan/live accordingly rather than expect someone else to pay for it all...and people like you and me would be the ones to have to do that because we "made the big time" and are the ones demonized.
You know, I love The Champ, and especially one of his sayings: "Plan your work, and work your plan". Too bad he can't make a better grill:)

Honestly doubt it. I would think negotiating leverage is better spent on other areas, besides the 2 months of training.

I personally would rather see that one go to increased first year pay, to help our pilots after they pass training.

YGBSM. Minimal negotiating capital would be required to improve Traing pay and it would benefit both Pilots & Company. Same goes for Health Insurance on Day 1 of employment.

I'm starting in October; should I also expect breaks in training for Thanksgiving? Do they let you positive space home for breaks like that?

I was in training over Christmas and went home for about 36 hours, it was very stressful. The culture might be different now that the clown is no longer here. You may or may not have a few days off over Thanksgiving. I doubt you will actually train on that day but they will not positive space you home.

Depends on IOE backlog. They target 6 weeks, it may stretch out to 8 if you get a wait for IOE.

Don't expect to get positive spaced home. It may even hurt you if you do go home. You want to be 100% zoned in during training here. There's little to no wiggle room if you fall behind on your studies due to getting distracted by family activities.

3 years ago we took 5 days of for thanksgiving but no positive space home. Also I don’t recommend going home in the first place. If you are a OCT hire you will be close to your oral or PC by the time thanksgiving arrives so even if you get it off just stay and study. The people who hold holidays above training success have a higher failure rate.

I know people that have gone home every opportunity and have had zero trouble in training. Just work hard while your there and study on your flight home and back to FLL.
