Very simple... if it’s terrible... let the world know it.

P Slotten used the term “Unstacking” in the Vegas Roadshow. Sounded like it would be a part of the Terms and Conditions of Spirit PBS yet to be negotiated.

If everyone’s preferences leave too many trips over a certain section of the month they “unstack” a certain percentage of pilots and force those trips on those pilots during those days. It all depends on the rules and language when it can be done and how much of the pilot group is affected. Could be done every month but mostly on holiday months. Good rules will have it controlling only certain days like 2 days before Christmas to 2 days after and have a separate bid sheet if you happen to be in that percentage. It’s all in the rules and oversight, typically it’s the bottom 35-50% or so that are affected.
You have vacation in the second half of the month, a guy junior to you does not. The only line that can be built when it gets to your seniority is one that would have you working during your vacation....Welcome to reserve!!!! Even though that guy junior to you gets a line. System Constraints are everything when it comes to what you want to pay attention to as the Union talks with the company on PBS. You think that seniority is everything?? In PBS, not so much! Being able to build the "right" number of lines is everything. And the company is going to want that be the criteria with the ultimate power. If it is, then seniority can go out the window in a hurry. Remember that PBS is a very powerful tool. If it has no limits that protect seniority, then the middle half of the seniority list can have some interesting things happen to them on a month to month basis. |
Here's something I've learned from years of PBS.
Lets say you bid the middle of the pack for your domicile and Christmas is coming up and you really want it off. You ask for it off in all your layers because you think that there are enough people below you that you should be awarded Christmas off. Everyone above you asks for it off too and as PBS starts to build lines, it gives all those senior to you Christmas off. When it gets to you, Christmas now becomes a "coverage" day. It's the coverage days that are wildcards every month. You never know when they are or if you are going to get hit with it. The company needs the flying covered on that day (because it gave it off to everyone above you) so it disregards your preferences and says it needs you to work that day (the dreaded CN). The next few guys below you also get hit with these coverage days. As PBS starts to get down to the bottom 3rd of the senority list, those guys get Christmas off because it's no longer a coverage day. Every holiday, I wondered why I was working and those below me had it off. Here's the thing. PBS doesn't know that Christmas is anything special. It's just another day that needs to be covered. PBS sucks. Everyone starts off thinking its gonna be great but they quickly realize how little control they have over their schedules. |

By the way, if you need free legal advice, ask. I consider myself to be an expert in many things, including scope law. |

The guy that posted the question is using a screen name very similar to mine because he thinks he’s funny I guess. |

Thanks for the answer. I have not used PBS personally and while I’m familiar with the term unstacking and what it means I’m certainly interested in as much pbs information as I can get from those that have used it before.

Are you and your two screen names done mocking me for no reason whatsoever? The contract is ratified. It’s over. You’re right I’m not an expert in scope law but I do know how to read. And further, the topics I was speaking about on scope were proven that I was interpreting the language 100% correctly. So what’s your problem?
No, no you were not interpreting the language 100% correctly and were corrected many times on these forums. And what do you mean, 2 screen names? Never thought that maybe that’s someone else? Would it blow your mind to know it’s someone else? |

Haha. Only you would write 3 sentences demonstrating humility, only to punctuate it with abosolute arrogance at the end.

Where PBS gets messy is that it will have to build everybody a legal line (or a specific number of folks anyway) Since everybody wants 4th of July off, you would think that it would be the junior guys that would end up working over that time. But, If the junior guys all flew most of their flying in late June then they can't fly in early July. Couple that with being a senior guy with vacation late in July and now maybe the only way that everybody can get a line that the system wants to give a line to is by that senior guy working a 4th of July trip!!!

Don’t worry, seniority fixes almost everything.
But really, congratulations. PBS is industry standard. |
