Limited premium flying opportunities

no assurance of reserve period despite seniority

commute to reserve vs trips

can’t swap with open for preferred layover cities, soft credit, more commutable, etc

long call converted to short call

flying the awful orphan trips leftover, or cobbled together Frankenstein pairings like double deadhead layover, one leg, layover, deadhead home and no hotel/transport booked

getting called out on a holiday because a line holder short calls sick

Sure there are people here who talk about how easy reserve life is here, but it’s largely anecdotal.

The question was “what is so bad about reserve life at Spirit”. With the exception of RAP selection; you listed universal facts of reserve. Getting called in to work when a line holder is sick is the entire point of reserve, and sometimes the trips are pieced together.

This again? I would be willing to bet that the largest group of “yes voters” were senior pilots far removed from the regionals. Simply because someone believes that NK is better than the shathole regional that they came from does not mean that they were willing to compromise. Where did you come from? Is Spirit better? If not, why did you leave? I for one was a member of the “lost decade” at the regionals, which means that I ABSOLUTELY know about crappy qol. Get off your high horse. I’m guessing that you accepted a job when NK was near the bottom. What does that say about you?

Of course NK is better then a regional otherwise neither one of us would be here. But people voting for something that is subpar but “better then their regional” is how we end up losing work rules and QOL.

That’s not how it happened. That’s like saying 5xxxx voted NO.

Don’t leave DL for NK

NK is a good place to work but it ain’t the supportive and friendly place this guy says. just to be devil’s advocate....this place very much has the skeletons
of our old CEO all over it. Mgmt steps over dollars to save a nickel in almost every aspect of the operation. Crew scheduling can’t figure out the flight attendants cba is not the same as ours. In training you’re going to be packed like a sardine with FA in the hallway screaming their call outs. Our passengers generally suck and have no common decency. When you deadhead you’re going to see the filthy planes and lavs (and gum chewing selfie snapping gate agents) the passengers have to deal with which goes a long way to harden the belief we are low tier.
The only reason this place is any good is the training department goes above and beyond to do a good job and Sandy has some magic wand that weeds out the jack wipes and manages to hire people that are good to fly with. And the pay is livable.

I’m not dismissing your particular frustrations, but your post it’s fairly unbalanced. Seems like you’ve been focusing on the negatives. Maybe you’re burned out? I have bad days too, but I don’t feel like that at all. Well maybe one day or two a year, but I enjoy going to work. My stress level stays low. I don’t feel threatened. I think my boss is a pretty reasonable person, he addresses my concerns or comments and as long as I do my job and act in good faith, I have no issues.
We do have some real weirdos riding in the back, but hey, they’re not royalty. I flew corporate (among other flying jobs) and booting out a costumer that payed $35k for that flight, it’s a little harder than booting out one that payed 35 bucks.
Crew scheduling drops the ball sometimes, but they’re respectful and reasonable. Rescheduling it’s bringing its share of frustrations, and sometimes supervisors are playing the convenience card, but the language itself its absurd.

It’s only my opinion and I’m just trying to bring up some perspective. That’s all.

Most of what you said is true. My negative comments were in response to the unicorns and rainbows utopia some other post was making this place out to be. 401k Dc subpar, hotel connection debacle, IT department designed for 1985, CS.... I could go on but you’d say I was burned out.
I was giving a bit of balance. We aren’t going to fix this place by pretending large areas don’t need improvement.

“We” aren’t going to fix this place. So since “we” can’t fix it, I don’t worry about it. Control what you can, and not fixate on what you can’t.

This I can guarantee. If you aren’t happy with the direction of things, the MEC chair position will be becoming available soon. Any volunteers to help change the direction of this group would be welcomed. Rumor is SM has his hand picked successor already, so unless something changes, apathy will continue as always.

Yes. Compared to the legacies, our contract it’s behind the power curve. Some important things like reschedule language and reserve should have been addressed in this contract. There are no excuses for that (in my opinion). Now, pay and 401k... well hate me for saying this, but expecting to catch up with the legacies on on this contract was too much of a leap. I’m not a conformist, nor a yes voter. But there’s some realities that are just plain crude.
It’s important to talk and address our frustrations with this contract, so we as a pilot group have a clear view of what we want to fight for on the next one. Exaggerating our frustrations and laying out negativity as a “wake up call” to the rest of the pilot group would do little to improve our chances. We’re only going to poison ourselves.

I agree in that for prospect candidates it’s important that they do their homework. No rainbows and unicorns here. This is a growing airline with growing pains and a lot of work ahead to try to catch up with the big ones.

I’m constantly getting questions from people interested in coming over, that’s why one day I decided to start posting and answering questions in this forums. I’m trying to be as helpful as I can so NK candidates can make an educated decision. I really don’t want to fly with a new FO that whines and moans about not being able to break guarantee on reserve, or frustrated he/she can hold a line in LAS after 2 months on the line, or that his/her buddy at UA is getting layovers in Hawaii or Madrid while making way more money.

I like NK and I’m happy here, but it might not be a good fit for everybody and vice versa. In the meantime shoot your questions.

If you believe, then we can always fix this place. Its kind of like the wild west for opportunity and a good sales pitch goes a long way with a growing company that has many holes to improve. I wasnt here but that could be how we got pbs lol. With all the ups and downs i still love it here and have yet to fly with a bad apple.
