The World Health Organization essentially says the same:

I’m not trying to win an argument either, I am simply trying to keep things factually correct. I personally like to wear a headset whenever I am flying but that’s just because I feel I can make out both cockpit and ATC communications better that way. But being junior, in an environment where it’s safe, I’m not going to wear a headset if the CA isn’t wearing his/hers. When I upgrade I plan on both me and the FO wearing headsets from engine start to shutdown. But that’s me.

And while there might be some biological variance - and almost certainly is - I know of no credible scientific source that believes a 40 hr week 8 hour a day time weighted average of 70dB is harmful to anyone. If you have one I’ll be glad to stand corrected, but it isn’t going to be NIOSH or WHO.

That’s exactly where I’m at. I do what the captain does, but I don’t like it. I’ve never seen as many missed ATC calls as I have since I’ve came to Spirit, and for me, I have a very hard time hearing ATC unless the speaker is blaring, which quite frankly, It is annoying. Judging by the number of captains that crank it up, they have the same issue, along with the missed calls I’ve witnessed.

I see zero downsides to wearing good headsets. There are no comfort issues if you have nice ones, and they make the flight deck much more relaxed, for me.

You’re going to tell your FOs to wear the headset? Wow....

If I’m signing for the aircraft, yeah. Cause I’m going to wear mine and that’s what an intercom is for. Wouldn’t want the FO to go hoarse trying to scream his/her way past my ANR. Wouldn’t be prudent.

I love some of these new guys we are hiring. Going to dictate that you are going to wear a mask or wear a headset. I guess you will dictate that your fo always does the walk around also since you are allowed to do that? Lol

Not to get involved in the discussion of making anyone do anything, because I wouldn’t play it that way, but this comment makes me believe there are captains that do walk arounds? Because I sure haven’t ran across one yet.

I do, depending on the outside temp and conditions. :D

I do them depending on the situation, time, Wx and if I like the person I’m flying with. So basically once a month I do one.
Kidding aside, I find it respectful to do them at least a few times on a trip or if the fo is new and doesn’t need me breathing down their neck while they load the box for their leg. I find it a good time to step out.

I do walk-arounds when possible (aircraft swap, or new entry = no bueno). I’ve still spent more of my career in the right seat than the left, so I see no shame in inspecting my airplane.

Who started this FO has to do the box on their leg stuff anyways? Same people who go get a cup of coffee for only themselves?
