Another fun fact about commuting at Spirit is that if you don’t make your commute they will now assign you reserve for the days that the trip covered. They used to give us the option to drop, add a different trip or reserve but supposedly people found a way to abuse that so now scheduling was instructed to assign reserve 100% of the time.

Yeah, except no one was abusing it. In the past they would allow you to drop the trip but also blocked your trip footprint from picking anything up in open time or X/Y list flying to rebuild your credit. The union rightfully so filed a grievance and eventually won it in arbitration. It was always the company’s decision on how to handle a commuter drop, choosing to put you on reserve now is just our punishment for winning the grievance.

Commuting and reserve.

I know commuting to reserve is especially terrible. I’ve done it. So my question is how long is reserve trending at Spirit across the different bases and what’s been y’all’s experience commuting to reserve? Thanks!

Anyone have any knowledge on commuting out of Coprus Christi, TX? I figure between options at IAH or DFW (although senior), it wouldnt be too bad. Additionally, as someone who has never commuted, I would assume *most* people prefer to string together as many trips together as possible in order to avoid commuting (day or 2 day trips sounds awful). Just wondering what the most realistic max day trip a new hire could potentially string together at one of those bases? Thanks in advance!

You’re going to sit reserve for a year and have 6 reserve days in a row followed by 4 days off. Get a Crashpad or plan on spending money on hotels.

Not true anymore. I sat only one month of reserve. Have had a line two months in a row and will again in November. Base dependent but everywhere but DFW you should have a line after 4-5 months. Not sure what ATL or IAH will look like.

How long is reserve trending for LAS FO?

Thanks for the info! When sitting reserve for 6 days in a row, does Spirit have short vs long call? If so, what are the expectations for that? I've heard some people that are within reasonable driving distance to their base may drive an hour and hang out at a coffee shop to be within a "short call" distance of like 2 hrs and if they dont get called, they just drive back home.

Lastly, and I know it is heavily dependent on base, seniority, and time of the year....but when called out on reserve for a trip, are the trips usually day turns or are they longer in duration of like 2-4 days normally?

LCR is there but not many SCR, 3 hours from call ready at the plane. Can’t speak to other bases but LAS had been largely 3 day pairings for me on reserve. Couple 2 couple day trips. Zero 4 days

All the above my friend. 2-3 day trips, red eyes more than you want. LCR goes senior. SCR is 3 hours ready to run the before start checklist, so whatever that means for you. Sometimes you get called with 2-3 hours notice, other times it’s 5+ hours, varies

Looked elsewhere for this but figured a commuting thread was decent place for this question.

Honestly the parking in my base isn’t even worth it. The amount of time spent waiting for and riding the bus isn’t worth the savings from just paying to park in the garage.

Can reserves pick up open time on days off, or just list on XY?

Out of the 6 days you said you’d be on reserve in a row, how many days are you guys usually being used?

That sounds horrible unless you want to spend 10Hrs in a coffee shop.

Im sure that's oversimplified, but sure beats spending money on a crashpad or hotel and sitting around that not getting used...

To each their own

Again depends on base. LAS plan to be used 6 of 6. Super short in base, everyone transfers out before hitting the line. Hopefully that will slow soon.

As with most airlines I’m sure it varies wildly. Expect to fly 90% of your RSV days in LAS. Maybe the first day and or last day of a bucket aren’t used.

It all varies based on how many people are available in each day’s bucket, your relative seniority, how close you are to min guarantee etc. I’m in MCO, relatively junior, and I haven’t been called the past 2 days. I’d say I’m used 80-85% off the days.

Most of the time in my experience, before your first days of a block you can look on crew trac and self notify if there's a trip and then if you are on a 2/3 day they'll give you the next assignment when you check out. I've only gotten the bare minimum 3 hr call out 1 time but as always YMMV

Truckn 10-21-2022 11:07 PM

How long does it take to hold a line in LAS nowadays with everyone leaving before hitting the line? And should I look for a crashpad or is there any cheap crew hotel I can budget less than $500 a month?

I have a “nice” pilot only crash pad at $400. On reserve and hardly ever use it because I’m being abused right now. I’d venture to guess once these reduction/expansion bids stop it’ll be 6-7 months to hold a line in LAS. Easily going to credit over 100 hrs this month

Is JS priority among spirit pilots based on time of listing/check-in or based on seniority?

JS based on first to list, 72 hours prior, NK only. After that, NK check in, OAL check in

I’m going to be a California commuter. I’ve heard I can XY list in BUR/LAX. Is there a good chance I would be able to pick up trips out of these outstations often?

You can only X list at your base. But, you can Y list there. No you can only pickup trips from a base so can’t out of LAX. You can try to pickup trips with LAX overnights though.

Y list only. That means they call you and if you answer, you have to take the trip.

As others have mentioned you can only list for X list in your domicile. CS calls you to see if you want to take the premium trip. You could Y list out of either BUR or LAX. Again, CS calls you and with the Y list trip and you have to take the trip if you answer.

You can pick up open time trips, as a line holder, but it is at straight pay. Grabbing premium flying, as a commuter, kind of sucks. Much easier if you live in your base.
