Backpacks

If you’re wearing a backpack with your pilot uniform you look ridiculous and further, if you have on both shoulders you make the guy next to you look like he’s dropping you off at preschool. I don’t care if it’s tumi, you look like an idiot.

There is also only one color suitcase and it’s black. Period.

SaintNick 07-21-2022 04:11 PM

Someone is in a bad mood… who cares let people get to work how ever they want to…

dualinput 07-21-2022 04:13 PM

And for the new guys, as fall and winter approaches, the pilot sweater or north face are not approved uniform.

AllYourBaseAreB 07-21-2022 04:18 PM

Cmon…. They didn’t look like school kids…. They look like Mormon missionaries!

“But but at my regional…”

Seriously, we are scraping bottom of the barrel here soon, you think uniform compliance is a reason why these guys are still available for Spirit? I agree our uniform compliance is a joke, but it’s around #856 on the list of what I care about right now.

BeechedJet 07-21-2022 04:24 PM

I don’t wear a backpack to work but boy do I feel silly bringing the big bag along when I’m doing day turns all the time.

Just carry whatever you bring your iPad in. Brightline or a briefcase.

Don’t worry, soon you’ll be packing for a 4 day trip, non commutable on both ends. You’ll have tons of crap to bring.

BeechedJet 07-21-2022 05:27 PM

Fucck yeah, I’ll stuff my thong in my brightline bag. Watch out El Segundo, here I come.

GrumpyCaptain 07-21-2022 05:48 PM

I would so come to work with my wife’s purple suitcase if I knew who you were and would see you passing or flying….

IWalkJun12 07-21-2022 05:51 PM

Are you the guy with the mask?

BeechedJet 07-21-2022 05:57 PM

It’s like an eyes wide shut thing but yes

Sinko de mayo wears a Fanny pack over the shoulder.

It’s an ALPA fanny pack, so it’s cool

I put the straps under my epaulets so people still know.

Airbum 07-22-2022 03:16 AM

I would guess 90% of UPS pilots use a company provided backpack.

Way easier to climb the stairs then a flight bag.

And Heely’s make gliding through the terminal easier too. You could be on to something here…

Cyio 07-22-2022 05:11 AM

While I don't use a backpack, I have often thought about making one my flight bag. I like to hike on overnights and it would be nice to be able to dump the flight stuff out and have the backpack for water, food, phone etc. Not sure I would ever use it as intended in an airport though, but rather have it on the J hook like a normal bag.

They make ultra lightweight backpacks that collapse into the size of two pairs of socks. Works great for layover day hikes or trips to the store.

Helps get up to the second deck on the 747.

Hugh Betcha 07-22-2022 08:21 AM

Whatever you carry your stuff in, do not be an optimist while doing a turn. The airplane will break and you will smell.

While I'm here, where do you put all your previous airline and military stickers on a backpack? My folks bought me an expensive wheeled chart case for X-Mas 40 years ago, not only does it double as a "green" Publix grocery bag on weekends, but when I retire (at 67) then I'll obviously need it for my weekly dispensary visits. I'm throwing out pearls here guys.

Tranquility 07-22-2022 09:26 AM

If I wear a backpack but wear the lanyard, do the two cancel eachother out??? 🤔:D

Cockpit997 07-22-2022 10:03 AM

I found a Fanny pack big enough for my headset and iPad. Score.

BeechedJet 07-22-2022 10:56 AM

One time I wore a backpack for an assignment. It was hard squeezing past the 30 flight attendants in the 20 person capacity crew room with that thing on. It was harder to slide to a working computer to check in but lucky for me, the third one turned on. As I headed to the gate, I noticed as I stepped over a family of 8 blocking the boarding lane, one of the kids had the same backpack as mine. That was pretty cool, Jansport for the win. As I weaved through the line of passengers waiting for the absent gate agent, I noticed a teenage wheel chair pusher on their phone by the door. I asked them if they've seen the gate agent and I got a blank stare. 10 minutes later the armed security guard came up to watch over the scene, we talked about the flight to Houston. 15 minutes later the plane showed up, white nose cone on yellow paint. 5 minutes later the gate agent showed up. They parked the plane. By the time I could make my way down the jetbridge, the inbound crew already shut the plane down. "good airplane, brakes are hot, sorry we didn't see you we would have left it running" said the Captain. "It's ok I replied". I slide into my seat, power the bird up, notice its 88 degrees in the cabin. Oh there's no air available at this gate, I'll get the APU on after all we only have 25 minutes till we're supposed to push. Still waiting on the cleaners but hell I don't pay the fuel bill. No one is answering in ops, I'll run up to the gate to ask the gate agent to call the cleaners. I get back up top, tell the agent we need cleaners. Right as I turn around to head back to the gate, I notice someone tweeting something to Spirit on their phone. I don't normally look at other people's phones but this got my attention. I say "GREAT FLIGHT EXPERIENCE SO FAR BUT THE PILOT WAS WEARING A BACKPACK #NEVERAGAIN #SPIRITAIRLINES #TRASH #UNPROFESSIONAL"

.

You need to take a lude and relax. Bet you are on a bunch of no fly lists.

This isn’t cargo. Different appearance standards.

Also have never seen a ups pilot with a backpack actually on their back in the terminal.

Exactly. I wear a cumber bun.

B200 Hawk 07-23-2022 07:26 AM

Please find a better day trip bag that’ll hold a spare change of underwear, a tooth brush and the company iPad. Until we stop doing 75% 1/2 day trips the backpack is the way to go.

(I am anti both straps over the shoulder however, at least in the terminal)

Reminds me of the NorthFace argument people make or the sweater argument people make. People who wear non approved uniform items but say “I press my shirt and I’m not overweight”, thinking that’s a pass for the uniform.

There are tons of day trip bags out there that don’t look like you’re going to the gym or 2nd grade math class. If you think strolling up to your gate with a backpack over 1 shoulder looks acceptable as an airline pilot, you’re in the minority for sure.

Rationalize it all you want, it looks ridiculous.

Here here, hell yeah, can I get an “AMEN”?!

Utterly ridiculous and unprofessional is the only way to describe someone who thinks a 🤬 backpack is a good idea with a pilot uniform.

At this airline I’d argue not “looking acceptable as an airline pilot” is the majority. No one presses their shirts or hems their pants (assuming the pants are even the right color) to a length that says “I’m a professional”

Can’t argue with what you’re saying.

I cringe whenever I see a backpack.. double cringe when it's on both shoulders! Summer camp, anyone? You guys look ridiculous.

Fah2 07-23-2022 10:14 AM

If you swear by the layover utility of a backpack, take it to any tailor, have them double stitch a flap of cordura across the area that would be at your mid back, but leaving a 6-8in gap in the middle. Now when you extend the handle of your luggageworks you can slide the handle through that gap and transport it like you would a headset/chart bag.

Boom. Twenty bucks and you can carry a backpack without looking like a middle schooler, and the flap will sit flat when you wear it around town.

Case closed.

Conquistador27 07-23-2022 11:30 AM

I’m guessing the majority of people on here that are *****ing are also wearing north face jackets and the wrong color pants. By the way, I’ve been double strapped for a while…..oh, wait, backpacks. Never mind.

This and a lot of backpacks already come with this on them.
