Stranded Crews

Tucking (with an F) unbelievable… literally stranded crews in airports all over the country. This sh!t should be in headlines, not “poor passengers”. 8,000 jobs lost overnight and hundreds stranded without hotels, in airports, on their own to find a place to sleep. While all these schmucks have millions in bonuses? They should be publicly shamed.

my flight was cancelled, in an outstation, after midnight. Even though the email came out “scheduling will accommodate crews” from Dave Davis — bullsh!t. All lies. Still waiting for a place to sleep. Can’t get a hotel for tonight, because tonight is technically tomorrow — after midnight.

Bluediver 05-02-2026 02:44 AM

JB has extended J/S (cabin only) to pilots and F/A’s looking to get home for the next two weeks. This is awful and I always appreciated the rides guys/gals. Good luck to you all and may this time of trial be short.

biigD 05-02-2026 03:05 AM

Yeah, at AA we're allowing cabin travel for Spirit employees through May 9th.

Good luck guys, this is friggin' terrible. Hope everyone finds a good place to land.

The situation sucks no doubt but you are a grown adult. You aren’t stranded.

“Additionally, we’re stepping in to help Spirit employees by extending pass travel benefits on United (booking through the ID90 portal) for the next two weeks to help them get home safely. We’re also welcoming Spirit employees to apply for open roles at United via a dedicated link – which will spotlight their application for our recruiters to prioritize.“

I know over here at the widget we have hired a lot of former spirit pilots but not sure about other positions. Best of luck to everyone, never fun to have an unexpected job hunt.

This wasn’t unexpected.

Sailfish234 05-02-2026 04:15 AM

Sorry for all the employees…pilots are all ways welcome on Atlas. We will get you closer to home.

hockeypilot44 05-02-2026 04:56 AM

The worst part is probably no paycheck on 15th which is for work thaf has already been performed. It isn’t right all around.

And that’s the premium check; so all the extra pilots were working in Jan, trying to keep the place going. Is there any word if they have funds set aside for pay?

Hoping the right thing is done and at least cut checks for work performed.

Well thats a bit foolish. Get a room, get some sleep and start polishing your resume like you should have two years ago.

My airline owed me 3 weeks back pay and 2 weeks vacation. I got a ck 8 years later for $108 (thats one hundred eight dollars) from the bankruptcy payout.
You are just another creditor now behind all the banks that loaned the money and are required to be paid first. In the eyes of the court, your tiny losses are miniscule.

You have to know by history, this is standard practice right? SchedulIng is long gone because they are not being paid either. Get out your credit card and pay for a room and get some sleep then go home or get on a flight and go home now. You are an adult you are not stranded.

BlueSkies 05-02-2026 05:55 AM

This really sucks and hope all NK employees find new jobs. I was really hoping you all would pull through on this one, I know some great pilots from NK.

It still sucks, and it still counts as being stranded by the Co. even if he can pull out the cc and book his own room. I think he's earned the right to complain about being left high and dry after midnight even if you know that's what happens in these situations.

How is the view from up there? You seem to think very grandiose of yourself. Typical of a narcissist, not able to show empathy.

100% here, this unfortunately was going to happen, the war just made it happen a little sooner, what was it 3 or 4 months ago they were a day or two from shutting down and only a last second deal kept the airline alive. Sucks for those left but lots of people saw the writing on the wall and jumped ship over last 2 years.

Creditors can pull their marker whenever they want. Fuel could have been a nickle a gal, wouldn't have mattered, when they decide they want their money, you have to pay one way or the other.

This is a management failure. Pure and simple.

Which spring boards me into the next statement - your company does not care about you. Every airline pilot should understand this. Unfortunately this lesson keeps getting re-learned the hard way.

I'm truly feeling bad about you all at NK. No doubt, you guys are a quality group of pilots and your coworkers have been getting hoovered up at the big 3 + SWA. Get your apps out (should have been out already) dust off the suit, get your interview swagger back and get out there and present yourself. This is a life changing event, rise to it and get yourself moving again. We're all pulling for you guys.

Employee pay will be one of the top priorities at the next BK court hearing. The BK courts have usually made this a priority for work already performed.

Absolutely wrong, there are many restrictions written into the finance package when a bankruptcy loan is created. The first one is the banks and finance companies are paid out of the liquidation money (if there is any) first!

My understanding...

Not "usually", it's the law.

Employees go to the top of UNsecured creditors, which is after all of the secured creditors.

But only up to about $15K earned in the last six months. Anything you're owed above that probably goes to the bottom with other unsecured creditors.

Yes secured creditors get paid first.

I have been last minute furloughed from 2 of my 3 airlines. No bankruptcy, no writing on the wall. Both times I had not been sitting around even though there was no indication of a shutdown. I ended up at different carriers because I was swimming in multiple hiring pools just waiting for a call. Sure it sucks, but come on this was going to happen!

It is wrong, been there and done that too! I received a ck for $ 108 dollars after 8 years. They owed me 3 weeks of pay and 2 weeks of vacation. Secured creditors are paid first, then unsecured. There isn't enough money to.pay the secured creditors.

…..

Thought about a book a had read about the Rise and Fall of PanAm, when I heard about spirit ceasing operations. When PanAm ceased operations, they locked the doors with employees inside. Secretaries were literally climbing out windows.

I lost everything after 9/11, but then gained everything with a medical career. Real sorry to hear that for you guys and gals. It will get better.

God Bless.

Hmm. I think that door and I would have words, and the door wouldn't fare well.

rickair7777 05-02-2026 01:55 PM

Alaska also offering rides....

We are offering Spirit pilots and flight attendants the ability to Jumpseat on Alaska flights for the next 14 days (through May 16). Spirit crews will need to present a Spirit crew ID and two forms of government issued ID to verify their identity. Jumpseats will be offered in the cabin only.

SDQPilot 05-02-2026 02:10 PM

Sad seeing so many NK folks out on the street this morning. I jumped ship myself a while back.

On a more serious note — not trying to stir the pot — but if anyone knows TheCalmCaptain personally, please check in on him.

I thought this was a pretty classy move by SWA:

"Jon Jackson, a Spirit Airlines captain, was supposed to fly his retirement flight on Saturday, but his airline shut down before he could.
He hopped on a Southwest flight to get back to Baltimore from Fort Lauderdale.

While on board, "we casually mentioned it to the crew," his son, Chris, a Southwest pilot, said in a Facebook post. Southwest staff organized a water cannon salute when the aircraft arrived and he was met with applause and a reception when he walked off the jet bridge, according to the post, which was confirmed to CNBC by Southwest."
