Default black srip on 737 slats

What is the black strip on the slats? i've only noticed this on the -300 and -500 series mainaly on UAL. check out the two links, one is SWA without them and the other UAl with them. What are they and what do they do?

Default Ice Inspection

I never flew the 737, but I'm pretty sure some 737-types told me they were for the 5-minute (before takeoff) ice inspection from the cabin.

Without the black strip, it is difficult to tell.

It's a manufacturers option... I have jumpseated on non-UAL aircraft and remember seeing the ice detectors on other 737s... but not 100% sure if on all type
