I don't think that the DC-10 will end up having the same service life as the DC-8. I have flown the DC-8, DC-10 and now the MD-11. The thing that truely made the DC-8 great was that when the electronics broke down and you lost the hydraulic system, you still had a cable. The DC-8 solidered on because despite poor mantaince, it could still fly. The only -8's you still see flying are those carriers that could justify the high maintance costs associated with keeping them flying. The rest have been canibilized to keep the few airframes going.

The issue with the DC-10 is the fuel cost. It burns 15% more than a MD-11. In the end, the cargo world is going in the direction of lower fuel burns.
