Damn guy also cruised at 60% torque on the way home after I told him I was trying to make a flight. Sorry buddy, I don't give a damn about block or better on the last flight back.
Hmmm... doesn't ring a bell. That sucks though.

I use either FLCH or FPA, I never use VS... unless ATC says maintain xxxxFPM in a climb/descent.

The autopilot int the Brasilia gives a much smoother ride while it tries to maintain a constant pitch attitude. When you put the FD/AP in VS or IAS mode it seems to chase its own tail. I like to hold a constant airspeed myself

In the B756 series, FLCH moderates the climb/descent rate based on how far the selected altitude is from the current altitude. If memory serves, it is either less than 4000' or less than 2500' where the moderating takes place. Beyond that, it is full/idle power. VNAV does whatever it takes to stay on its profile in VNAV Path, and to stay on the speed in VNAV speed. So, FLCH and VNAV are almost always appropriate.

I am not a fan of high altitude VS climbs because in the Boeings, you lose over/underspeed protection. I rarely use VS in climbs unless I am trying to moderate a climb rate to avoid leveling off at a "cross at or below fix." With descents, I sometimes moderate a descent for similar reasons.

Nothing scientific or rigorous, but I'd guess that 85% of the time, I use VNAV, Overall, 10% or so, I use FLCH, and less than 5% I use VS.

FMS managed climes for the most part, unless there's a lot of hunting.. then go to VS... I usually go to VS at the last 1000' if I'm climbing faster than 1500fpm since the AIM requests you do this to prevent TA/RA issues.

Also, VS has a smoother level off usually.

Speed modes then to work the worse I've observed on the dozen or so types I've flown.

VS cause its smoother, and the people in back are paying for the ride.

Use PROF mode in the MD-11. Seems to work well enough.
